Hi there. I have the choice between two different pianos to keep. One is a Gerhard Heintzman Toronto Cabinet Grand and the other is one that looks newer, a Mason & Risch Toronto. I would post pictures, but I don't see how to post pics from my PC.

We need a lot more information than that to be able to advise you at all.
What does the technician who services the pianos say about the instruments, relative to each other?

Why not keep both? If you can only have and keep one of the two, keep the one you like the best of the two.

I have 6 acoustic pianos, 3 grands and 3 uprights, and I like them all, and play them all. But if for some reason I had to choose one and get rid of the other 5, my choice would be easy. I do have a favorite (though the others get jealous at times).

Otherwise, I take turns playing each one of them, depending on my mood and my local at the time...

Hi. Neither has been serviced in a long time. Both have come up in family estates and two are a bit much to keep. Is there a way to post photos on this forum without using a link? At least them I could show some pictures. I can get more info off the pianos later today hopefully.

Yea, I know it's odd, and you're not the first to wonder why I have more than one piano. It is simple, really. I like pianos, and got good deals on all of them, a couple of them for free, and I do have the room.

Some people have more than one vehicle. Some people have more than one dog or cat. Some people have more than one house. I see nothing wrong with having more than one piano.

But, yea, I'm a bit odd... in more ways than one.

To the OP, 2Pianos, (like your forum name, by-the-way), posting pictures of the pianos here is not going to determine which one you like the best. Only your hands, ears, and eyes can do that.

Exactly! Only you can determine which piano you prefer.

This is what happens when you come down with the dreaded Piano Acquisition Syndrome. PAS.
Rickster even has homeless old pianos coming to his driveway, like ol’ Bessie.

*******I do love that story, Rick, it might make a fun western song or a children’s book. I even have a title: “Ol Bessie finds a new home”

Pictures may help to some degree, but will not necessarily indicate the playing condition of either piano. Theoretically, both were respected Canadian piano makes at a certain point in time, but in a used piano - and particularly in one that has not been serviced for a long time - condition and therefore potential - are everything.

Getting the serial number of each piano may help to date each instrument, but that still won't help to determine the condition of the pianos. For that, an inspection by a qualified technician is really what is needed.

I'd keep the taller one. But, again, you are the one who will be playing it day in and day out, and not me.

Both pianos appear to be in terrible condition, honestly. What would be the purpose of keeping either of them?

No.perhaps a new song to compose "Bring old Bessie home " How is that for a new song title ?

Ol' Bessie is old and seen her better days
But she still brings joy when being played
Tubby bass, twangy treble and loose keys
Can still sound good, at least to me
She has been around a long time
And likely heard many songs that rhyme
She's probably had a hard life in days gone by
But when she showed up at my back door
she knew it wasn't her time to die
Tuned her up, and she held it well
But even out of tune, she sounded swell
Ol' Bessie's not as pretty as she used to be
And that really doesn't matter to me
I love her still, at least for now
And I'll play her some more
till she takes her final bow...

When it comes to old pianos, condition is usually the most important thing to keep in mind. An old piano with a lot of wear can still sound and play pretty good. I've played some newer pianos that I wasn't so impressed with... but still, age can take a toll on a piano.

I still say keep the piano you like the best!

For some reason your poem Rickster had me have have a little cry ?
So it must be good !
It reminded me of our 13 year old dog who was rather sickly but not really ready
to go to heaven !
We were moving from South Africa ,my husband, son ,and myself.We had this dog
which we treasured from when he was a young puppy.
Logic told us (we could not find him a new home) to have him euthanized gently.
The day approached and we just could not ! So we had him boarded by a sympathetic
lady.
After we arrived in Vancouver and we were able to buy our house we arranged for him
to be sent over.I still remember fetching him at the airport.It was a happy reunion!
He lived for another 18 months (he was sick)We were always happy with that last final
decision ! I do not know how long 18 months are in doggy years but it would no doubt
have seemed more for him.

Glad you liked the poem about ol' Bessie, Lady Bird, and all! And, if it made you cry, and think about your beloved pet, then that has to be a good thing! Your story about your dog was heart touching, and I know dog lovers will certainly appreciate it.

I played the piano at another "PianoBuddies" piano party/recital this past Sunday, and one of the ladies there told me that my performance made her smile so much that the muscles in her face started hurting. Wow, didn't know my playing had that kind of effect on the listeners.

Fact is, my piano playing makes me smile a lot too, though I can't play all that well... good therapy all the way around.

Anyway, I hope 2Pianos can come to a conclusion regarding which piano they wish to keep.
