Does anyone have an opinion on whether a pianodisc midi retrofit for an acoustic upright would affect the regulation or playability of the instrument when used as an acoustic piano?

Thanks in advance.

I used to fit them years ago (from 1995ish), and the only side effect was about 6g added to the playing weight. Back then they used plastic strips under the keys; if they’ve changed to an optical system (non-contact), then I don’t think installation would change anything!😁

However, if you’re asking about the player mechanism, then that’s an entirely different kettle of fish...

Awesome, thanks much! I’m not interested in the player mechanism. I have a vintage upright from 1912 with a middle pedal that activates a silencing mechanism much like the Yamaha silent upright. I am considering adding a midi interface to it if the cost is not prohibitive.

Thanks again.

No problem. I'd be very interested to hear how you get on.

I played one of the Yamaha silent uprights, and wasn't keen. The fact that the shank was rebounding off a rubber strip rather than the hammer rebounding off the string seemed very apparent to me (perhaps it wasn't set up properly?), and I prefer the feel of a decent digital (something like the Kawai MP-8 etc.). In an ideal word we'd be able to play acoustic at any time, but we do have to think of the neighbours! laugh

I’m more focused on the midi capability than on the silent capability as I also have an MP7SE. The plan would be to attach a midi sequencer to capture improvisational/composing sessions for later evaluation, or to use with a sound engine for recording in general. That the piano has a silent feature would help the investment into a midi system retain reasonable value if I were to replace the piano with a new one.

Thanks again.
