So some of us have been harping on how difficult it is to use PW fortune on smartphones. 5-6” screens don't work very well with tiny fonts and full-screen columns. And the forum styles don't respect device DPI or accessibility settings.

Turns out it never had to be like this. Fixing the experience for mobile is relatively trivial for any forum operator. And it's almost trivial for a user to fix by themselves, too.

All you have to do is change a few elements in the site's css stylesheets, something I couldn't do all these years because I was using Android Chrome. So I finally downloaded Firefox mobile and did the following:

1. I went to the overflow menu and the Add-ons page.

2. There I found a css injector (I used the first one I found, "CustomCSS") and installed it.

3. I went to PW in Firefox, went to Page-≥View Page Source

4. I clicked on the stylesheet associated with the forum theme I use (Koniro in my case, yours may be cafe, ubbthreads.dark, etc.). Whatever it is, it should be immediately following the common.css sheet.
[Linked Image]

6. I copied into the clipboard the entire text contents of the stylesheet.

7. I then opened CustomCSS in Firefox (while still on the PW site), selected "apply to domain", and pasted the entire stylesheet into the text field.

8. Then I performed a search for every instance of "font-size" and increased everything 2x. So if it was 8pt, I made it 16pt, if 100% I made it 200%, if 10px I made it 20px. There are about 40 instances to change in the file (and you really only need to change two to get most of the benefit--the very first instance of font-size in the body tag, and the one in form-input).

9. I hit save, and navigated back to the PW tab.

And viola, everything was resized. It works on all PW forum pages, including new posts, threads and subforum menus, in quick-replies as well as the full-editor. Some elements (like emoji images) are still tiny, but these can be fixed if you do the same exercise with the common.css file.

Here's a before and after:

Before: unreadable/untype-able on a small screen.

After: all pages and text elements resized to be readable and interactable on mobile:

If you don't mind being stuck with Koniro theme (this will override whatever you choose), here's my modified sheet that can be cut and pasted directly into CustomCSS:

Usual disclaimers about not being responsible if this screws up your browser (but if it does, just delete it from CustomCSS, or delete CustomCSS itself).

Point being, it should be trivial for Frank to copy one or all of the existing PW theme stylesheets, edit the font-size tags and easily make a "more" mobile-friendly version of the site.

That's all I got, hopefully it's helpful to one or two of you.

Nice work. A tweak here and a tweak there, and voila!
And, yes, it makes you wonder why the forum software doesn't already have a built-in "theme" option that will do this.

It wouldn't solve my problem, though. A six inch phone screen is still problematic. I need an additional 20 inches of screen for usability.
As I type this I'm using a 13" laptop screen. Too small ... but on my day off while traveling, sitting here in my mountainside hotel, I'll put up with it.
When I get to work tomorrow I'l have "only" dual 24" screens, or dual 27" screens at home.

For several years I had been hoping that one of the several "Borg" headsets in development would solve this problem, such as the Magic Leap released a year ago.
But no. That one lacks full field-of-view coverage. And the resolution is limited. Too bad.

I hope I live long enough to get something suitable, and to say goodbye to "screens" forever.

Thanks, and yes I don't really expect many people to download a new browser, futz with extensions and modify site code, just for the benefit of browsing PW. But it really demonstrates that creating a mobile-friendly experience on UBB is can be trivial on the surface, and there's really no excuse for it not to exist in 2019. If Frank just copies and pastes that stylesheet as a new theme, all anybody has to do is select it when they're on mobile.

For your problem, I also used stylesheet mods to make the site more readable on my 13" Chromebook (Chrome desktop allows for extensions), but Chrome also respects screen scaling on desktop, so there are more options natively.

Maybe I will modify the stylesheets to make the fonts a little smaller. I'd like more of the page to be displayed in my phone.

That's easy, just lower the font-size to 18pt, 18px or 180% (or 15/150). You pick what you want!

And yes, it's a bit on the large side (guess I overcorrected). As I was testing it, I erred on the side of larger text so I could verify the changes to each element were working.

The biggest downside besides having to scroll so much more, is having to deal with Firefox (while I appreciate independent browsers, Chrome really does so many things better imo).

You could do this with Tamper Monkey.
It let's you create simple scripts that look for tagged style elements and insert changes into the rendered page.
Scripts can be set to apply to any web site, or a specific one.

It runs on Firefox and Chrome.

If you (CyberGene) were willing to invent this ... you could distribute it to all comers. And everyone would be happy with a phone-friendly Piano World web site.

Desktop Chrome allows for extensions, including CSS injectors and ad-blockers. Unfortunately, mobile Chrome doesn't (at least the official Google Chrome doesn't).

I’m using Safari in my iPhone. I have a bookmark that increases the font size of any webpage (mostly), but it works flawlessly in PW.
Just create a new bookmark, name it whatever you want and paste the following:

javascript:var%20p=document.getElementsByTagName('*');for(i=0;i%3Cp.length;i++)%7Bif(p%5Bi%5D.style.fontSize)%7Bvar%20s=parseInt(p%5Bi%5D.style.fontSize.replace(%22px%22,%22%22));%7Delse%7Bvar%20s=12;%7Ds+=16;p%5Bi%5D.style.fontSize=s+%22px%22%7D

Awesome! That might just be the easiest way to do this. Have you tried it on other browsers?

Just tried on Chrome and it works. Also tried on Firefox, but couldn’t create the bookmark, I guess Firefox doesn’t allow bookmarking JavaScripts.

This bookmark solution is a bit annoying though, you need to select it for every new page. I’ll try CustomCSS, hopefully I can make it work.

I just tried the bookmark solution, and I might be doing it wrong:

1. Safari MacOS - works like a charm, each time you press it, it increases the font size on the page. But yes, you have to find and click the bookmark for every page load, which is a bit of a hassle (and unlike desktop, on mobile you probably don't have bookmarks visible without digging through a menu).

2. Chrome Android - doesn't seem to work, page refreshes without change.

3. Chrome MacOS - refreshes a blank page with the string "28px"

4. Chrome Chromebook - refreshes a blank page with the string "28px"

5. Firefox Android - doesn't work, page refreshes without change.

I've also slightly modified the CustomCSS so it's faster (removed calls to reload redundant UI .PNGs and .GIFs) and makes the body text *slightly* less large to fit more on-screen:

HTML

So I just got thrown for a bit of a loop.

As long as I was willing to use a new browser for PW to solve the mobile issue, I thought to myself, why bother sticking to Firefox? It's kind of a buggy mess, TBH.

So after trying a few Android Chromium browsers (focusing ones that would accept desktop Chrome extensions), I made a startling discovery:

Kiwi Browser (Chromium) doesn't have the problems that Chrome/Firefox/Vivaldi/others do with PW mobile formatting! Wha??

If you load up Kiwi on Android, PW forums are formatted properly, text isn't minuscule, and columns aren't 100 miles wide. Plus, it doesn't load in in initially pre-zoomed state requiring you to zoom out to start reading.

You can still make some very minor adjustments if you want larger text (below), but frankly it's not really needed.

So for Frank/UBB devs, this seems like your themes are just broken on the most popular browsers out there, but work on some other browsers?

For users, another option to consider is just to switch to Kiwi (or find another browser that natively renders the UBB themes without freaking out).

If you want to increase the font sizes slightly for reading and composing/replying, this VERY short snippet can be used to do so, by loading into the CSS injector of your choice within Kiwi:

HTML
body {
font-size: 16pt;
}

.form-input {
font-size: 16pt;
}

And that's about it. Now you get the same Chrome experience you're used to, enhanced privacy and extensions, and PW just works. And you don't have to deal with Firefox.
