I understand now that Baldwin is now a stencil piano, but years ago, they make them in the USA, and had some quite high quality artist lines. Do they get overhauled in the same way that Steinway get overhauled?

After Gibson's acquisition of Baldwin, they did produce a limited number of Artist series grands in the USA well into the 2000's. How many and which models? No idea. I saw them disappear from The Piano Buyer listings around 2009 or 2010, presumably with some aging inventory in the marketplace.

Baldwins do get restored. Some of what drives the economics of restoration is the cost relative to a price for a new instrument of that brand/model. If Baldwin were still making Artist series grands in the US, they would ask premium prices...based on past trends and inflation, I'd estimate $80k for a 7' and $135k+ for a 9'. Without those prices for a new one, the willingness to invest in restoration is more specific and limited.

In restoration, we often see 9' Baldwins, occasionally 7' Baldwins, but for anything smaller, it is usually a family heirloom with extra sentimental value attached.

The model number should tell you which models were made in the US, right? The classic Baldwin pianos, like SD-10. SF-10, L, R, M, Hamilton Studio, and Acrosonics for instance, were only made in the US. These models were removed from the line and replaced with redesigned models when Gibson shut down operations in the US. Now, to the question of the quality of these instruments is another issue. But then Baldwin had quality issues in the factory at various times over the last 20 or so years they were producing pianos in the US. So, as with any used piano, it comes down to evaluating the condition of the specific instrument that is being considered.

My SD-10 was rebuilt in 2015, and then not played until I bought it. All new action, new pinblock, new strings. When the time comes, I will probably rebuild rather than replace, as long as the soundboard is still good.

The Chinese Baldwins that I have tuned were better than the later US built Baldwins. Many of the US Baldwin lines went cheap after the move from Cincinnati.

Baldwin built their "Artist" models in the U.S. until 2008.

To call the Chinese built Baldwins "stencils" is probably not a fair characterization. Stencils as I understand them were generic pianos produced w/o branding so that anyone could put their decal on them. If I'm not mistaken, Baldwin (Gibson?) owns the factory where some of their pianos are produced, and contracts the production of the rest to their specifications. I think grands are the former and uprights are the latter (but I'm not certain).

Baldwin dealers still list SD-10 and SF-10 as available new models. Chinese? Old new stock? Not really available? Just curious.

Bought a pre-owned Baldwin R (5'8") Artist grand built in 1999, mainly because I got a very good deal on it.

My intuition was correct, in that I like it a lot, Mexican action and all (has German hammers though wink ) . smile

They still list the Artist grands on their website:

Wishful thinking, or... ?

More likely, too stupid to know how to change the website. Baldwin sold off all the materials at auction. They have been available on Ebay.

No I can understand that. There was a time when Baldwin was an incredibly important piano manufacturer not only for the US but internationally!
I hope one day all the pianos will be made there again.

Baldwin is NOT a stencil. Their scale designs are unique to Baldwin pianos.

No a stencil is something different entirely!

But can you still really get a new SD-10 and, if so, who built it?

I regularly play a vintage SD-10 that I like a lot (it's better for some music, in fact, than the S&S D on the same floor). I'd sure be interested in sitting down and trying out a Chinese reincarnation.

Larry.

At one point it was suggested that the models were still on the website because some dealers still had old new stock. It's been 11 years now, but I discovered two Baldwin M's listed on Reverb.com--one black, one walnut--and the dealer says they've been floor models and recital pianos (and listed as "used"):

https://reverb.com/item/554227-bald...vintage-mahogany-showroom-demo-clearance

https://reverb.com/item/554371-bald...l-polished-ebony-showroom-demo-clearance

Perhaps there are still some "new" SD-10s out there in C&A service, or used on some dealer's recital stage.

Regarding resuming production, considering that Baldwin's skilled workforce has probably long ago retired, retrained or moved away, producing Artist models in China might be a safer route forward than producing them in Arkansas.

Oops, I guess the one is not walnut, but "vintage mahogany." Looks nice.

The new Baldwin 6'2" grand is built by Parsons Music out of Hong Kong. This grand is a recommendation by Pianobuyer employees. Having played it I found it to be very nice.

There is a small Baldwin dealer in my vicinity that has 2 “new” 5’2” M1’s (same as in link above, however in satin ebony finish). Asking price is $24k. At this point they must be at least 12 years old. They played very well, but were a little dusty! Unfortunately at that price it’s a tough sell. I’ve seen M1’s of similar age in good condition at much less on the used market. The other Baldwin’s they have in stock are a couple of brand new Chinese made uprights.

Agree that the newest Baldwin grands from Parsons are very enjoyable and pleasing pianos and far from just a “stencil”. The limited dealer network doesn’t help the brand awareness now. If more people had access to the latest Baldwin grands, their opinions would change.
