This photo of a pre WWII Steinway B was taken one week ago at our restoration facility:

This photo was taken of the same piano this morning:

I just thought it would be fun to see the transformation in a week's time.

Cheers!

Very impressive. As an amateur woodworker, I would find it interesting if you would also narrate the materials and processes you use along the way, like how many coats of whatever kind of finish on the exterior, plate, soundboard, etc.

Are those large scrapers laying on the keybed?

That looks like wet/dry sanding paper.

In the first photo, the piano has some coats of finish, and is in the process of being sanded in preparation for the next coats of finish. The second photo shows the piano after it's received its topcoats.

Always fun to see progress pics.

Rich - Thank you so much for posting. It seems that several people on PW would love to see updates and photographs, including myself.
Is this rebuild for a customer? Or will the B be sold after the rebuild?

Any chance you'll be painting wings on that Steinway? What ever happened to that Estonia? Maybe it flew away.

Just forget what I said I am not a "tattoo person" and never will be !
Now about the Steinway, yes those legs make that piano look great even with no decal.
Surely if one recreated a half faded decal it would fine ?It would take an artist but not
necessarily a great one.
A reproduced half worn away decal cannot be an authentic decal.Steinway would not
have legal recourse would they ?
The right artist could do a good job.
