I just finished reading this book in Japanese and was surprised to learn there's an English translation:
The Forest of Wool and Steel

The book became a best seller in Japan and was made into a movie that was released last year, here's the English-language Wiki about the movie:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Forest_of_Wool_and_Steel

It's not plot-driven, but about how the main character is drawn into tuning by his awe and wonder hearing/seeing a tuner tune the piano in his high school. Then the rest of the book is about his struggles to become a competent tuner and his relationships with the other tuners and their clients.

It's a quiet book, for lack of a better description, but a joy to read for those us in the Piano World. I don't know if the movie will be released with English subtitles or not, but if nothing else, I recommend the book (even though I haven't read the english version).

And because this is the way my mind works, when the book first came out, and then when it was made into a movie, I was really happy about all the great PR this creates for piano-ism! smile

There's a paperback version of the English translation coming out in Feb 2020 too. I must admit to being sort of flabbergasted at this story's popularity. I think it's absolutely awesome, but also surprising! But again, definitely great PR for the joy and wonder of piano sounds! smile

Wow Vlad Ants, looks like you found the whole movie on youtube there. Japanese language with Chinese subtitles, though.

Saw the movie on a flight back from Japan to the USA a little under a year ago.

Probably a little too idealistic for a professional in the grind of things, but it worked for me. It is set decades ago in a slower, more pastoral time, Hokkaido, or the like (can't quite recall).

However, there was a memorable scene where the junior tech in training handles a house call, and makes adjustments to the piano for the worst that he cannot recover from. You see him sweating bullets. Calls the senior mentor for help in the end.

It's a pity, but the movie has already been removed from YouTube. I managed to download the movie on my computer. I can put it in another place, if there is interest in this. True, there are places with a missing sound ...

Thanks. This looks interesting. Hoping the movie comes out in English.
