Greetings,

I have a friend who is a really good jazz pianist and we like to frequent one of the local dealers who has some very nice pianos.

I brought my recorder with me the other day and we recorded a couple tunes that I thought turned out pretty good, and I would like to know if any forum members would like to try and guess the type of piano, size, etc. If not, at least I think you will enjoy the songs. Thanks!

Trick question; it's a digital piano with Quantum Leap set on Bösendorfer.

I guess it could sound kind of like a digital piano, it was in tune and not a baby grand. You can notice that sometimes the player's touch is a little on the heavy side and the tone is affected.

I think the performance ability of the pianist certainly shows well, and I don't think digital actions are that good so as to have a pianist execute as well or with the same technique.

Is the reverb added? This can't be in a store, can it?

It definitely sounds like a big piano (over 7', probably 7'6")

And hey, this type of thread looks familiar...

Hi NewGuy,

I enjoyed your recent post and just couldn't resist!

The recording was made at the dealer, and I did add some reverb.

Could you take out the reverb and put them back on? It sounds good, but harder to tell what it might be. It might be a Shigeru, or a really big Schimmel. Bosie?

Newguy - I think the lack of reverb on your recordings actually made it hard to tell, but you are on the right track here. Because it was at the dealer, a little reverb was needed because I wanted my friend's recordings to turn out really good. I just hope everyone enjoys the songs!

Sounds American.

Harmonics aren't quite like mason...

Maybe a Baldwin SF10, or SD10.

If it's a steinway, I think they need to level the strings.

Your friend is a terrific player. I liked the version very much.

I thought American because of the low tenor and bass but the high tenor sounds European to me. Doesn't distort when it's hit loud.

I say Blüthner Model 2, 7'8".

Hmmm... it's kind-of hard to tell if only due to my lack of experience....
I do enjoy the overall tone.
Some characteristics in the middle couple octaves of the piano sound like a Bosendorfer, specifically the hammer attack and initial sustain/decay of the notes in that range. And even if it's not a Bosendorfer, it does have a European sound to it, IMO.
One thing that's making it hard to tell what size the piano is, though, is the relatively low bass/tenor break, and the relatively weak sounding bass (at least compared to the Rubenstein R-371).
I'm fairly sure the bass/tenor break is at E2/F2.
The low bass does not sound like a concert grand, though.... sounds like it could use some voicing in that area, as I've played some 5'8" grands that sounded better.

Is it a Hamburg Steinway B?

P.S. I'm not really a fan of some of the modern funky / weird chord / whatever it is "jazz" that's often played these days.... for example I sometimes hear a few locals play them at my local PTG meetings. These tunes, however, are quite enjoyable to my ear.

I am really impressed with you guys, because of the specific comments you are making. Probably you are able to have a definite opinion because the piano was very well prepped. As a result, the pianist could really get into it while playing. I am not trying to play any games and will not have you waiting much longer to find out.

The R-371, for anyone who isn't familiar, is a piano-shaped futuristic dystopia horror:

(And only one exists... we must destroy it before it takes over the world! smokin )

The bass is fairly rich and the trebles are very clear, indicating that it has to be a rather long (over 6 feet).

Is it a Hailun HG198?

Sounds Japanese to me. Although the upper treble is a bit thin.

When the puzzle is solved: could you please provide us with information how you made this recording? How many microphones, where positioned, what recorder? Or was it just a built in stereo micro?
