Well, I thought after purchasing my Yamaha NU1X last September that it would be my piano for at least a few years. But, I have been wanting an acoustic since I actually began seriously trying them out (mostly at our piano dealers in town, but also visiting various shops while out-of-town). In March I was in Seattle and visited a Steinway Gallery and had a ball playing, and thought I was set on a Boston 126 upright. I didn't want to buy right away, and figured I would wait until I start my new job in February (I currently work a little over an hour away and commute a lot).

This past week I went to my lesson (early, as usual), and noticed they had a few more used pianos in (the place I take lessons is a Steinway dealer). I walked over to a gorgeous-looking, rather tall upright: a Kawai K-50. I had never really played a Kawai acoustic before. I sat down, played a bit, and said "This is the piano".

I went back in yesterday and had the manager (who is also their chief piano tech and whom I've spent quite a lot of time with asking questions) go over the piano with me. Even they are amazed at how pristine the piano is. It turns out that they hadn't even done anything to the piano since they just got it in--not even a cleaning! Most of the notes were dead on, too. The action felt great to me, but the tone was just lovely.

Then, the brief story of the piano. It is from 2000 and was owned by an older lady and her husband. The woman passed away earlier this year, and the husband finally decided he would part with his wife's piano in the hopes that someone else could enjoy it. I had already decided that I was going to purchase the piano, but then I heard the story and it just broke my heart.

So, they still have to give it a thorough cleaning, regulating, and tuning; then after a couple of weeks in my home they will come back and properly voice it to my liking. I will get the full cost back within 10 years towards another piano if I decide I want to upgrade, and they are installing a Dampp-Chaser for me as well.

I am very excited--and a little nervous--about having such a big acoustic in my home, but the price was more than half of what that new Boston would have been--and I just didn't have that instant "connection" as I did with the Kawai.

Sorry for the long post--will add pictures once I get her home!

Thanks, all! It's getting delivered tomorrow, but sadly I will be on call and away overnight! Will have to wait an extra day, I guess.

Thank you so much! I really enjoy playing it: hasn't even been tuned properly (I had a Dampp-Chaser installed so we all figured it would be best to wait a week or two), but is gorgeous! Such a great feeling.

Hasn't been too much of an adjustment coming from the hybrid. This morning I used the practice pedal and didn't seem to bother anyone.

So far, I'm glad I made the switch laugh
