My IpadMini has reached a point where it no longer can handle latest technology due to the fact that I cannot load the latest operating system on it.

I need to upgrade.

I want to be able to place it on the music stand on my MP11SE and access various sites with the sound going back into my keyboard.

My choices are Ipad, IpadMini, or some sort of similar device (tablet) with Windows 10 as the operating system.

Any suggestions ?

A new ipad is still the best choice.

I tend to agree.

However, the VST thing does not work well on apple products.

Here is something that I ran into …..

How big is your piano desk? If it's big enough for a 20" monitor ... I'd rather have the monitor than any tablet.
Plug the monitor into any laptop and your good.
Bigger screen. No obsolescence. Lower cost.
And you still have the laptop to take with you.

12.9 inch iPad Pro. It’s the perfect size for reading scores, which you can download for free from https://imslp.org/ since the copyright on most classical music has expired. It’s almost as if the iPad Pro was made specifically for music. It’s that good.

Yamaha N1X, P-515.
Genelec 8331 monitors and 7350 sub.
VI’s: Garritan CFX, VSL Bösendorfer Upright, and VSL Blüthner 1895. Pianoteq.

Not clear on what you mean by my "piano desk".

I have a normal music stand attached to my MP11SE.

I plan on placing my tablet on that stand.

It needs to be a touchscreen device as there is no room for a keyboard on that.

Plugging a monitor into the laptop (or desktop) would be an option if the monitor was a touchscreen … I am not familiar with that possibility.

The piano desk is where your sheet music goes. Some are small and/or flimsy. Some can hold a large monitor (minus the monitor stand).

Yes, I just checked that out.

That is a thought.

There would be more to investigate with that.

Like …. Connections for VSTs …. I assume that would still be done with cabling to desktop/laptop from keyboard.

That issue is why I lean toward the tablet / Ipad option.

I'm getting a large touch panel with my DAW workstation for just this reason. I also have an iPad Pro, but I find iPads awkward myself.

I have owned various iPads since the iPad 1, and I have always found filesystem operations to be awkward. For example, create a file in one app, open the same file in another app. It's gradually getting better - for example, I create scores on a MacBook, put in DropBox, open in forScore on the iPad, but the workflow just still seems awkward to me as compared to similar workflow on a PC - either Windows or Mac. It requires gargantuan effort to organize files hierarchically on the iPad (for example, nested folders, etc)

So I'm not getting rid of my iPad any time soon, however if I am going to be using something a lot every day (like stuff supporting my piano), then I thought it would be better on a real operating system. Because I live/work in an "Apple ecosystem," I prefer that operating system to be Mac, but Mac Pro towers are just too expensive. I am having a Windows-based DAW workstation being custom-built at about 35% the cost of a comparable Mac Pro.

Have you tried airdropping the scores to forScore? You can do that from your MacBook and eliminate the need for DropBox entirely.

Reading scores is not one of my needs.

You are moving into a topic separate from my original reason for creating this thread.

I would prefer if you would pursue this in a separate thread.

Thanks

I was going to say that this is not enough for reading scores.

I think that even 20" is marginal.

But then ...

I generally will use it for accessing computer education websites for online instruction.

The iPad will work perfectly for that.

However, the many (if not most) of the VST products do not support the IOs operating system.

Specifically, the :Pianoteq product does not and I have that product and will use if from time to time for jazz blues tunes (others also).

So, as long as I am purchasing something, it would seem that something with the Windows 10 operating system would be best.

So … a tablet comes to mind.

Then, there is the issue of which specs do I absolutely have to pay attention to in order to be sure it will support my VST needs.

How much memory ? Speed ? Input/output options ? Storage ?

And that brings us to this again ….

Suitable ?

I never heard about this device, personally, i wont consider it ., the CPU is weak.
If you budget around 600-800, consider these

Surface Pro 6, 799 with a keyboard
HP Envy 2-1 , upgrade CPU to Ryen 5, for +70 the total still 660.
HP Envy 2-1

I would consider the HP Envy 2-1 …. except that I need a touchscreen (as in Tablet) not a keyboard attached. Unless the keyboard is in addition to the touchscreen and the keyboard can be detached.

The HP is touch screen, you can flip the screen and make it work like a tablet.
the surface pro is great for this kind of usage ,imo.
