For those good at playing by ear what might a productive 30 minute practice session consists of? I know scales and inversions are obviously crucial. But what am I missing? Teaching myself. Thanks

Here’s an exercise my improvisation teacher gives me. Hopefully gives you some ideas.

Transcribe a song in 30 min:
1. Pick an easy song you can handle
2. Transcribe from the General to the Specific.
- Start with the basics: time signature, Major or minor sound, map out the form/structure, count the measures.
- Identify where the music repeats, varies and changes (in a general way)
- Identity/Transcribe individual phrases/motifs/lines/riffs
- Identify Chord progressions
- Identify Key or at least take a good guess.

• create an improvisation/arrangement on the musical ideas. At minimum use an ABA form.

We are the music makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams.

I used to sit at the piano and just try to play things I'd heard a zillion times, like old pop songs. If you can hum it reliably, you can figure out the tune on the piano. Same with the bass line if it's clear and distinctive ("Sunshine of Your Love" and "Whiter Shade of Pale" come to mind :-). Then the fun part is trying to figure out the the harmony. You can often get a great deal of mileage out of good old I, IV, V, and Vi, and when your standbys aren't enough, nothing beats finally figuring out a chord you've been struggling with, even if you happen on it by accident. Pretty soon you accumulate a whole library of useful patterns.
