I am putting new keytops on an Aolean player piano and realized that the standard keytops are too long and too wide. I found keytops for sale with "short heads" but I'm not sure if this is the right product. Does anybody have experience with this? Thank you!

Though I do not replace keytops personally anymore, I know there is more to it than meets the eye. For instance you must carefully plane/sand/rout or whatever the top surface to remove the difference between the old and new keytops, same with the fronts. Otherwise you risk having serious clearance issues and one adjustment will lead to another, and another.

Most everyone I know who does this has the power equipment and fixtures to ensure dimensional preservation and squareness, as well as trimming and nothing. It is not just a simple matter of gluing on a set of plastic tops. But perhaps you already know this...?

Yes. I have installed keytops before, but these keys are quite a bit smaller, so I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to file away at a standard set of keytops, because that would just be much more waste. I figured there must be a product that's a better fit.

Sounds a bit of a nightmare. Might it be better to refer the job to a specialist key-recoverer?
