"Open box" is synonymous with "floor model". It's hard to sell a piano unless you have something to show, so they do.

The dealer needs no excuse to lower his price. But buyers are wary of floor stock ... so the price expectation is lower.

$13k new delivered, no taxes, with warranty on N3x is a great deal in my book. For the past few years, I have informally tracked the AvantGrand used market.

A used N3 without warranty is significantly cheaper; but if you are going to use headphones, the binaural option on the N3x offers a lot of value IMO.
____

BTW, there is a used N3 on PianoBuyer in NJ for $8,500 ask (original owner purchased in 2015); haggle down a bit and that is also a good deal.

The deluge of used AvantGrands in the NorthEast tapered off and just a few have been on the market the past few weeks. That is likely partially a function of summer holidays and cheap hybrids that got scooped up.

The system of no-tax for item bought in a different state to the one you live in is pretty appalling though. It means there is a huge disconnect between the retailers in a given state and their own constituents. You can't give your own people the best deal. That's an absurdity that really should be changed. Why should your local salesperson be able to give somebody down the road across an arbitrary border a better deal than he can give you? Ridiculous! Everybody knows that the transport industry has been screwed to the wall. It's just not a level playing field. That, and people actually don't seem to think dealers have the right to make more than 10c on a deal - at least on a deal involving them.

Just out of curiosity: does N3X and all the AvantGrand family include different acoustic piano samples than let's say P515 or CP88?

Ando,

It’s technically not correct, in terms of what is being advocated here. Anything not taxed via sales tax is instead subject to “use tax” which is equal to the sales tax of one’s home state. Whenever I purchase a piano out of state, I pay the use tax because the pianos I own are legitimately claimed (and depreciated as) business property, and I want to make sure what I’m doing is “above board”.

It’s a matter of time until the reporting of big-ticket items gets to the point where folks will get in trouble for not paying the sales/use taxes. It’s probably already happening in selected areas and types of products.

How much dealers make is set by the free market - unless that is, one is in a command economy.

Any legitimate tax avoidance is a bonus, if you ask me. The money is much better off in my pocket than in the government's clutches.

I was not aware that people in my state were "my own people" any more than people in another state.

People can think what they want. Dealers can do what they want. A sale is made when both parties are in agreement on the terms.

State's rights meant a lot more at one time than it does now. Still, California is a different place than Louisiana. smile
