Hi Guys, I have a dilemma come to choose the perfect mover for the new piano (to us).
The piano is 10+ hours drive away, and the seller opt for Modern Piano Moving, quite reputable piano transportation company, however, after picking up the piano, we will have to wait roughly 30 days before they can dispatch to us. My wife is worried about the storage and long wait.
On the other hand, I found this local piano crew, for few more hundred $, they agree to pick up the piano, and drive 10 hours straight, and deliver it the next day. But compare to the big company's air riding suspension, insulated cargo wall equipped trucks, the local company is using a trailer to haul the baby grand as shown below.

My concern is can our baby grand endure 10+ hours in this small trailer?
Greatly appreciated your opinions!

Whenever I can here, I will always make it my mission in life to NOT recommend Modern Piano.

They scratched the living daylights out of my D, picking up in Iowa, going to their hub in Atlanta, and then, yes, waiting for 30 days for LA delivery. They also jammed the action up too -- sticking keys and other related issues to the sustain pedal. It was a nightmare !! It took my tech about 3 hours to fix it.

When I tried to make a claim, they denied it. EVIL company !

There's a small, independent guy outside of LA, up in Lancaster, CA. who delivers all through the US. He actually took my Yamaha S6 up to Victoria Island in Canada. I don't know if he's still in the biz but worth a call :

jojousa,

As long as the piano is not going through a "polar vortex" or he does not drive through a lake on his way to the delivery, the trailer ought to be just fine. Frankly, any piano will need some adjustments after delivery.

Also, being delivered within 24 hours after pickup - and never coming off of the original truck/trailer for storage and reloading onto another truck - does have it's advantages.

Accidents do happen. Independent of Dave Ferris's experience with Modern, which I do not mean to diminish, I have never had a bad experience with Modern. (Although I have not used them in a few years. I have other options I prefer right now).

Good luck with the move!

I don’t know anything about moving pianos but I know one takes their chances when using a freight company. Anyway, I thought this writeup by Martha Stewart on having her Steinway moved to her daughter’s apartment was well done:

Good luck!

I know A&N quite well, LarryK. They are a good company.

I’ll keep them in mind if I have to have a piano moved. Thanks for the recommendation.

My philosophy on moving is to look for those companies who have been doing it for a long time and to be willing to pay more. I’m always suspect when the price is too low. There is generally a correlation between price and quality of service.

I had an expensive amplifier moved from Buffalo to NYC. I went with the company recommended by my seller, a guy who had shipped far more expensive gear around the country. The 175lb amp was in a shipping crate and strapped to a pallet, but fork lifts can be run through the side of shipping crates. Anyway, it all turned out fine. I wish the OP the same.

The store where I bought my piano does piano moving, I've been happy with how they've handled my piano moves and they're responsible if anything goes wrong. I would guess their service is more expensive but I've not compared prices. You might try asking some local piano stores on either end of the move if they do a similar thing.

Thank you guys for all your input, we decide to hire the local company to do a quick job. So anxious to see it in couple of weeks!

Victoria Island, in the Arctic?

Perhaps you mean the more temperate Vancouver Island where the capital city of the Province of British Columbia, Victoria, is located.

Mine as well ,the colonial buildings, the bay, going for
rides in the horse carriages, past the haunted houses.
We go every Christmas.I remember one Christmas eve
going for a horse carriage ride through town around the
inner harbour, huddled under thick blankets, snow falling
and we were singing Christmas carols.
