I am looking to buy Yamaha P45, Casio Privia 160 or something similar. Where is the best place to buy these? Online? Guitar center? Just for reference, I am in central NJ.

Thanks

Those are all very common mass market DPs. Big box music stores like Guitar Center or Sam Ash are your best bet for sure.

Be advised that the order fulfillment system of Guitar Center may fill your order with a floor model or open box return by another customer, shipping it directly from the store to you instead of your getting a factory fresh one from shipped from a warehouse.

My chronological list of the top 20 composers: Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Wagner, Verdi, Brahms, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Debussy, Bartok, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich.

If you decide on the P45, have a look at the Yamaha P71 sold on Amazon... same exact model (with pedal and power adapter) for $100 less.

If you get on Guitar Center's mailing list, you'll eventually get an email with a 15% or 20% OFF coupon. The coupon's fine print will say "not usable on a whole bunch of brands, including Yamaha" (not an EXACT quote!). But in my experience here in N. California, if you take the coupon into your local GC they will be more than happy to give you the discount.

(My understanding of the "cant use on these brands" thing is that the mfrs. have an advertised price that if the retailer goes below he loses ad co-op money, or maybe even the franchise. But the retailer can SELL for any price, just can't advertise it. A "xx% OFF" coupon is effectively advertising you can buy Brand X for a discounted price if the mfr. isn't specified as "not eligible".)

When I ordered a not-in-stock keyboard recently from my local GC, I specified shipping to the store and I'd pick it up there. This way, if shipping damage or anything else appeared suspicious from the outside, I could refuse it without the hassle of returning it.

I like to buy from Sweetwater. They have decent prices and great service if you ever need technical help or need to do a return. If you ever get to their store they support local artists, have a performing auditorium, recording studio, and have all kinds of workshops on various topics.

I've come to prefer Sam Ash over Guitar Center.

Every GC I've visited had limited keyboard stock, mostly VERY low end and poorly displayed.
Every SA I've visited had a vast array of keyboard, all nicely displayed.
There's just no comparison.

Lucky for you, in NJ there are four Sam Ash stores:
2100 Route 38 . . Cherry Hill . . . . . . . 856-667-6696
1831 Rt. 27 . . . Edison. . . . . . . . . . 732-572-5595
E-50 Route 4. . . Paramus . . . . . . . . . 201-843-0119
155 Route 22. . . Springfield Township. . . 973-376-5161

Do they have stores or is it just online? I saw their ads but I could not find their stores.

There are a few big music stores in midtown; why not take the train to NYC and have a nice afternoon?

The Sam Ash and Andromea are good places to start. I think the Sam Ash keyboards are at west 34th street

I believe they are based in Indiana, USA. I don't think they have other stores, but I could be wrong. They're mostly a mail order place. I've used them recently, and I was very happy with them.

I believe they are functionally identical, except the P71 is just exclusive to Amazon.
