Go to a page linked in the first post. Search for the term "FREE DOWNLOAD" on that page and that has the download link. Apologies for the confusion.

I downloaded the Steinway out of curiosity to check it out and only looked at the close mic. There only two sample groups, main and releases. No separate samples for pedal up and down. There a lot of effects enabled, so I turned all of these off to just get the raw piano sound. The release volumes are set too high, so I went into edit mode and turned the volume down on this sample group and adjusted the release time (R) on the main page down a bit.

The main sample group has 9 velocity layers and the release group only one. There are no pedal or other sounds included, and no half or repedal features. Very basic. With all the samples there is a 20 ms leader or blank space in front, so there is considerable latency when playing. I got rid of this by moving the start for all the samples.

Another problem is the lowest velocity was sampled around mezzo and so there are no lower dynamics. The lowest sample cover velocities 1-72 and the other 8 samples for each note covering velocities 73-127. So essentially there are no usable dynamics. Also, the undamped keys at the top octaves behave as damped notes, so not like typical libraries or a real piano.

Once I made these adjustments to make it somewhat playable, note to note issues are quite noticeable. It is also quite bright sounding compared to most other Steinway libraries. So bottom line this is not a playable library, but maybe with the built in effects it can be used as a textural backdrop. You will need to be able to edit this library fairly deeply to get any use out of it. I may try the bosendorfer as well, but suspect the behavior is the same. This one is coming off.

Thank you so much for your "under the hood" analysis of the Sonex Steinway. This provides a great roadmap for those of us who want to get a better understanding of VIs.

Out of curiosity I downloaded the free Bosendorfer 290. Don't bother people - a complete waste of time and hard drive space. The interface looks cutting edge (in a tacky 'Transformers/Top Gear' type of way), but the sound quality and playability - that'll be 1 star from me.

I listened to the audio demos for the non-free acoustic piano package. All the pianos sounded boxy or hollow, and there was a lot of echo/reverb, whether that was built-in reverb or added.

That package includes three Yamahas, C3, C5, C7, a Fazioli F308, Bosendorfer 290, Steinway D, Steinway B, Baldwin and an upright piano.

No mention of which piano was being played in each of the demos. There were only three demos, but the package includes nine pianos, so it's clear that only three of them were demoed.

Which ones, I don't know, only know I didn't like any of them. If the non-free pianos (though not expensive) sounded bad, I'm included to believe the free ones sound (and play) even worse.

Yes, I tried them both. They're a case study in echo chambers. Totally unusable. Not even worth the price of free.

And what a mess of controls. I don't know (or care) what most of them do. They could at least set the defaults to give a decent sound. But they don't.

A big mess. And a waste of time. (I'm glad I don't pay network metering charges!)
