Simple question - What exactly is "aftertouch" on a digital keyboard?

Thanks!

After you have played a note/key, while still holding it down, you can press harder to generate an after touch event. This could be set up to activate a vibrato effect, pitch bend, resonant filter sweep, or other effect. Both the keyboard action and the sound engine have to be designed to do it. A downside is that some players find it causes them to increase tension, which could increase the risk of injury.

My chronological list of the top 20 composers: Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Wagner, Verdi, Brahms, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Debussy, Bartok, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich.

Thank you! I always wondered what it was and how it was used.

As an extra complexity, some keyboards have "monophonic aftertouch" (the total pressure on the keys determines what MIDI level is sent to the sound generator),

some keyboards have "polyphonic aftertouch" -- each key generates its own aftertouch MIDI data stream.

So with polyphonic aftertouch, you can control the loudness (or vibrato, or pitch-bend) of _individual notes_ in a chord, in real time --

. . . if you're a good enough player to master it

. . . and a good enough musician to use it well.

Be careful what you wish for . . . <g>
