I see this mentioned fairly frequently on PW but don't know what it sounds like. Could someone describe it or better yet post a recording of a piano with tubby tone? Thanks.

If you lightly touch a bass string (with a clean finger or with a glove on) near the agraff you can simulate a tubby bass string. They lack sustain and upper harmonics, so they sound dull. Tubby is a range. If they are just a little tubby it may not be that noticeable to an inexperienced ear. A very tubby string is very noticable to anyone, especially if it is right next to a normal string.

Kind of like the difference ‘twixt a tom-tom drum and a floorboard... 😁

Also, what Rysowers said 👍😊

Its literally like hitting a metal tub (like in your laundry or bathtub)- dull, flat, lacking in high harmonics, short decay time. Hence tubby!
