I don't know if you or your husband are mechanically handy, but I used a small bottle jack and a short length of 4x4 to lift each leg of my piano when I changed the caster cups. I put the end of the 4x4 right next to each leg. You will be surprised how light the back leg of a grand is, I lifted mine easily myself by hand.

As long as the tail is not corner of an exterior wall I suppose.
WhoDwaldi your piano does look nice there.I had my old grand with
the tail in the corner of the exterior wall. That piano was old but I often
wonder if it would have lasted longer with it faced somewhere else ?

Ok, I think I have settled on a placement. We just spent 2.5 hours, we moved everything out of the piano room (except the upright, my upright doesn't have wheels) and experimented with the piano floor template. Doing that helped to visualize how we would use the room, say for piano parties. Also, seeing the template with relation to the window, I realized I can't bring myself to put the piano in any spots that would place it closer to the window or the vent, even if the blinds/curtains are closed and the vent is closed.

So this is the final (?) choice:

Hopefully it won't look or sound horrible....

BTW Lady Bird and anyone else who can comment, re the tail being by an exterior wall, would it be worse for the tail or the keyboard side? Or does it matter which side it is? This layout has the bass side a long an inside wall and the tail towards an outside wall, although I'll leave enough space for me to pass through b/w piano and wall....

Oh, that's not my piano room--somebody else's that comes up on Pinterest. But my placement is similar. I keep my lid down, or it would be screaming into the wall.

And my bookcase is to the left. 😁

I think #8, it is nice to look out of the window and have a view while playing

I would like to keep an eye on the other rooms and door you don't want people sneaking up on you.

ShiroKuro it sounds like you have fairly moderate weather so I suppose it will be fine.
Of course if the wall is thin (unlikely ) and warms up with all day sun or you have some kind
of moisture problem by the exterior wall that would be different.
You could of course measure with a hygrometer if the hygrometer is sensitive.
Here in North Vancouver the winters are very moist with rain falling for almost 10 days without
stopping and we can have weeks of below zero. Not often but it does happen some winters.
It used to snow much more years ago in Vancouver I am told by local people who have lived here long. You could ask in the technician's section if someone here does not answer this question.
It is so exciting that you will finally be getting your piano !

So should it be presumed that the someone walking into this room from the hallway could get whacked by the front door being opened on him? And the front door and the door leading to the TV room is not aligned, essentially a broken door path line? This is really bad floorplan design. I've seen a few houses like this, and I wonder why architects do this.

Anyway, about the piano, it looks like there is no way to place the piano and have permanent seating; the room is too small to have egress to the piano and have room for folks to sit. With that in mind, #2, perhaps with an even higher angle of rotation would be the best. Folks could bring in a folding chair to sit along the top & bottom walls.

ShiroKuro - I must congratulate you on your thorough planning. My friends frequently kid me about being so steady and analytical at work. My total planning was pulling out a tape measure, writing down relevant pricing info from Piano Buyer and taking my music. It took me 30 minutes to decide on the baby grand and a very fair trade in for my upright. And it was delivered next day. Two years later the same dealer had a post-NAMM sale. I saw and tried my C3 one week before I bought it. The owner asked my tech to call me and see if I was still interested. I showed up the following Friday, which I had off from work. I played a couple smaller, less expensive grands and went back and played it another 30 minutes. Wrote the check. It was delivered next day. I’ve been delighted for the last 7 years. Now I’m doing extensive research on the less than likely chance I want to trade it in.
I’m sure your extensive research will help you be confident in your decision.

swampwiz, it does look like that, doesn't it! Fortunately, that is just a bad rendering of the floorplan drawing and the actual room is not like that, the front door, fully open, does not touch even the door frame of the hallway door. Also, I believe the front door and tv room door are actually aligned (I'll check when I go home though), again, just a feature of the quickly thrown together drawing. The thing I paid the most attention to was making sure the length of the piano image and the wall lengths were to scale, which I think they mostly are.

Steve, thanks for that link, I've read that article over and over again. It's tricky though, because I have those two (door-less) doorways, which I know change the equation in meaningful ways.

Anyway, for now, we're going with layout #10 and once the piano is in place, I will see how it sounds.

j&j, once the purchase was decided, the piano movers weren't available immediately, so I've had these last few days with time on my hands (anxiously awaiting piano-delivery day!) and decided to fill the time with preparing.

We'll see how it goes. I'll post some photos once the piano is in place. (I am soooo excited!! smile
