Hello. Looking for a silent piano so the kids can still play at 7am without waking the neighbours (or me!). I’ve seen a Yamaha MP70N for £2000 and a Yamaha P112N for c£2500 (both silent, of course). All things being equal, which would be the more sensible option?! Is there much to choose between them? Thanks...

Last Boat:

Given the prices, I am assuming that these are used pianos. Which one I would buy depends upon the condition, as condition is everything in the purchase of a used piano. What is the age of these pianos? How much use have they had?

Have you played both these pianos? Does one stand out over the other? If so, then have it examined by a technician to assure you that it's in good condition before you buy it.

Regards,

BruceD

Thanks BruceD. No I haven’t had a chance to play them yet but just wondered if people had opinions on the piano models, based on their own experiences. Of course trying them out would answer my question but they are located a few hundred miles apart!

The MP70N is 20 years old and the P112N would possibly be around 10 years old. Let me throw into the mix a Kawai K-15 ATX for £2850 (9 years old) and see if anyone has any preferences...??

Any piano of this age really needs to be played - they could bear very little semblance to what they were new. The "better" one could have been ignored or played hard, the "lesser" one could have been serviced twice a year, played nicely and be a much nicer piano.

Your profile doesn't indicate which part of our planet you're in - that might help. In some markets, in that price range there are many, pianos for sale.

Ah ok. I’m in the UK, where secondhand silent pianos seem to be hard to come by (or really expensive). I appreciate what you’re saying and totally agree! In an ideal world, I would drive around testing these pianos personally but I don’t drive and with three young kids in tow, this just isn’t practical. All three pianos have been well-cared for and tuned regularly. The Yamaha MP70N and Kawai K-15 have been fully serviced by the shop that’s selling them, and both are reputable companies. The Yamaha P112N is a private and reluctant sale, due to health. That’s all I have to go on! I guess I just wondered if anyone has experience of these pianos and could tell me how they compare. I’ll accept any advice whatsoever at this point! I tried a new Kawai K-15 ATX3 next to a new Yamaha B1 and preferred the tone and feel of the Kawai but then I’m led to believe that both Yamahas I mention are better than the B1. They’re both made in the UK. So, any further opinions or preference between these 3????

Yamaha MP70N (1998) £2000

Yamaha P112N (c2008?) £2500

Kawai K-15 ATX (2010) £2750

Actually, I’m also looking for expert opinions or knowledge of how the Yamaha silent piano technology around 1998 or 2008 compares with the Kawai silent system of 2010?! Should I be posting this in the digital pianos forum?!

To be honest, I think I’ll be happy with any of the 3 pianos but c£2k is a lot of money to me so I want to be sure I’m getting my money’s worth. I currently play an acoustic that I got for free from eBay, that desperately needs a tune, but I still love that!

They did not appear on Kawai's North American price list until ~2014.

Interesting - thanks, Steve. Does anyone have any experience of playing one?

I think, in my opinion, that the DP system is just too dated. Several versions behind what is available in a Kawai CN27/29 available today for around the same price.
