This appeared in my neck of the woods. Seller claims it was built in Germany in 2013. No hits on the pianoworld forum and very little on the internet that I could find - ever heard of them?

Steinburg? I am sure I read up something on PW
It is more than likely a stencel piano.

It's not built in Germany, if it's 48" tall, 6 years old, and only $4,500.
I don't think it's related to the Wilh. Steinberg company.

Interesting, thanks for the info folks.

I'm no expert, but if the plate has a "Wöhler & Steinburg / Germany" company mark molded into the plate, it couldn't be a stencil (could it?)

Yes it is probably the Chinese manufacturers way of saying Wohler & Steinberg pianos were
originally made in Germany." Paying tribute "but also it is deceptive !

Buying a stencil piano has all the appeal of buying a fake Rolex 🙄

Yes JJ, I agree but if you know it is a stencil and it is open, in the clear then it is fair.
But if you buy the Rolex and it is fake and if the Jeweller.do not tell you it seems to
me to be fraud. However the fake Rolex may keep perfect time although probably will
not last as long as the authentic Rolex.
In my CL experience recently I came across a few of these .Carl Muller was one.
By just playing it however I was suspicious.A different example was more tragic as
it involved a German piano manufacture that was declared bankrupt. This firm had been
(the only one)making pianos for a longer time period than Sauter.
The lady in the piano store explained why it was going so cheap---now made in Korea!
The piano looked like an exact replica of a German piano !

Buying a stencil piano is not like buying a fake Rolex, but would be like buying a watch from a new manufacturer, wouldn’t it? We tell lots of pianists not to buy the piano based on the name. Shouldn’t that advice also apply to stencil brands?
Just a thought.

I wonder if the answer to that last question might be dependent upon the reputation of the manufacturer of the stencil brand - if that is known.

The seller probably doesn't realize that this is NOT a German built piano. I certainly cannot find ANYTHING on the internet regarding this brand - stencil or otherwise. A serial number might help identify the actual builder.

I agree but when we do not know the manufactures and the piano has this decal which is deceptive .
This particular instance seems similar to the fake Rolex.
I agree if this is a used piano the owner probably does not know.

Let me explain my comment. A stencil piano, made in China, that uses a German sounding name and “/Germany” on the front is relying on the name with a country of Germany next to it is being sold fraudulently, no matter if the piano actually plays. A fake Rolex is sold fraudulently as a real Rolex. But the watch will still work. The amazing price for the piano or watch should be the first clue but people buy fake Rolex’s and bad stencil pianos every day. Unfortunately.
