Will the Yamaha NU1X get a successor soon? #2879115 08/13/19 08:53 AM

Hi everyone

I’ve followed the interesting threads on Yamaha NU1X over the past year, and was very excited about the firmware update that seems to have solved most of the loud note issue (which was the thing holding me back). Though loud notes might admittedly still occur for some people, I’ve decided the it has been solved enough for me wanting to move on and replace my old dp.

The one worry I have is if Yamaha would announce a successor right after I get one, and I’d like to see what you guys believe is on the roadmap. The NU1X was announced only 2 years ago, so there should be a while for the next generation but my mind just got started smile

Would you see the firmware release as an indication in any way of them soon releasing a new model (or even indicating the contrary: now that the NU1X is fixed, it would give it a couple of more years as the top upright in the avantgrand series) or is the update completely uncorrelated?

Since you’ve waited a year, you might want to wait a little bit longer to give the Kawai NV5 a look over. It’s the first upright competitor to the NU1X.

Yamaha's upgrade cycle for the AvantGrands is very long. There are recent posts showing dates of release of the various models. Yamaha hasn't even gotten around to upgrade the N2.

I don't believe they will release a succesor anytime soon, but as tyrone already said, definitly wait a little bit more so you can compare it to the Kawai NV5.

This post has dates.

There is reason to believe there won’t be an N2X. At least 4 different people posted on PW about having heard rumors about this from their various dealers (including me!).

Yeah, no secret inside info, the the "N(something)X" is the current gen for Yamaha. Considering it took 10 years to get from "N(something)" to "N(something)X" I imagine you're safe from anything new coming out tomorrow. The most likely "I wish I'd waited" regret scenario is that prices will drop, especially with the Kawai competition.

Now learning: Chopin C# minor Nocturne (posth) and C minor Prelude (big chords), Mozart Sonata in C K. 545
Instruments: Yamaha N1X, Kawai ES110, Roland GO:PIANO

Makes sense, though it seems the NV5 has a bit higher price point. Think I’ll wait for the local store to get the Kawai in so I can try that before deciding.

I think you're making a very wise decision. Yes, I know there are those people who say that if you keep waiting for the next best thing you'll put off buying forever, but in this case you're comparing two models that are competing directly against one another. I don't know how long you'll keep your next piano, perhaps about eight years of so, but it will certainly be long enough that being patient now is a big virtue.

I'm writing from the USA, and using exchange rate values, along with expected dealer discounts, I'm guessing that the NV5 will cost about $500 USD more than the NU1X, which I can get for $6,000 including all taxes and shipping. To me it would seem that the numerous voices and features of the NV5, as compared to the spartan NU1X, would justify the increased price. Except that there's so much more to consider. Will the acoustic upright feel of the NV5 be as wonderful to play as the NU1X? How about the damper pedal? The sampled/modelled tone of the Kawai compared to Yamaha? The headphone tones? And who knows what else?

What all this means is that you're going to have to do a lot of testing, and you certainly can't settle for playing each instrument just once. And when you do get your new baby home, at some point you'll wonder if you made the right decision. I can guarantee that will happen more surely than I can guarantee that the sun will rise in the east.

At any rate, best of luck in your buying decision.
