I was looking around Craigslist and saw this ad for a 1960's Schimmel grand. What struck me was the interesting plate design and the very wide tail. Has anyone had any experience with this particular model?

To your question, No I haven't. Interesting, though. Does that bass bridge appear cantilevered? If so, then is it a little unusual to have a wide tail/sharply cross-strung bass strings?

Please forgive me if some details and/or timing of this is incorrect. This was shared with me by Wilhelm Schimmel himself.

So around that time Wilhelm Schimmel drove across the United States to many dealers and introduced them to the "continental console" that the Schimmel company basically invented. Here is a photo of the piano. I have never seen a two toned example of this model. I have only seen them in ebony polished finish:

I am telling you this because, at this time, Schimmel was thought of in Europe as an ok piano, but it was not thought of as the quality that they produce today. I have never seen the particular model that is in the photo, but I suspect it is not the same quality as their "K" series or "C" series of today.

Good luck!

Man, that plate is highly stylized! It must weigh a ton (or perhaps some of the bigger parts are open underneath).

It's unbelievably clean and "new" looking for a piano of that age. I wonder if it's been refinished.

Speaking of the shiny finish, I got a chuckle from the photographer's legs and feet reflected in the rim. wink
