I need to replace improperly hung hammers & WNG shanks and do not have the originals so I was asked by my long distance tech if I could take some measurements including string height. Without buying the special tool , anyone have any recommendations on getting an accurate measurement for comparison to what was already explained to me?

You can use a ruler. Just measure straight up from the keybed to the strings. If clearance is a problem, a stiff piece of wire can be cut to length and measured.

Or use two popsicle sticks (or equivalent), hold them together and slide in opposite directions till they take up the space between keybed and string (at strike point). Holding them firmly together so they don't change length, make a mark across the edge of both, then CA glue them together. Repeat.this for top and bottom note of each section, label accordingly and now you have a strong height gauge for the entire piano. Record your measurements and send them off. Then you can use them to set your regulating scaffold if you use one.

When regulating, I measure from the string, not from the keybed.

From what I understand the measurement is taken from the top of the keyed to the underneath part of the string. Thanks for the measurement help
