Recent False Beat Topic?

Trying to find a recent Topic on false beats where someone was convinced that they were due to the plane in which the natural bend of the wire was in relation to the tuning pin. There was mentioned about how it is not due to any twist in the wire. There were descriptions of two tuners twisting the string a number of times and not producing beats. I think the Topic was just a year or so old and perhaps referred to an article in the PTG Journal.

Anybody remember or can find it?

I seem to recall Ron Nossaman talking about trying to "create" false beats snd failing.

Well, if one twists a bass string 720 degrees, you will usually get some pretty strange wobbles in the sound.

Several years ago I stopped overpulling strings when restringing or pitch raising (except for a few bps). I think overall my stringing work sounds better since. Seems like far fewer false beats in treble wire than before. Even a Chickering 121 with treble half agraffes...pretty clean all the way to the top.

Have a 1917 Steinway M that SHOULD have had false beats all over the place due to loose bridge pins...however surprisingly free (not totally, but substantially) of them. We will see what happens when I get it all back together.

Does anyone here STRAIGHTEN their wire, and if so...how?

Kinda wondered about that, too. Schaff says their thing-a-ma-bob on their 1/3 pound spools straightens wire, but I think you would have to be an artist to do so.

I get the 1pound coils and keep in the dispensing canisters.
When I take it out to use it kind of straightens itself out plus when it’s stored it’s not in too small of a coil as it relaxes and expands a bit in the canisters.

I have removed wire from pianos that seemed exceedingly "straight" and have wondered how this came about. Others still have plenty of curve to them after 100 years so clearly the tension alone does not straighten the wire (as I used to think).

I seen that either Paulello or Berlioz (in France) use this

Some other folks seems to using similar stuff : https://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/straightening-024-spring-steel-piano-wire-281453/ & http://www.mireut.com/tools.html

Does anyone have strong evidence to show that it actually makes a difference?
