Hi all,

When playing my Kawai MP11SE through my interface (Presonus Audiobox iTwo) the sound quality is significantly diminished compared to playing with headphones connected directly to the Kawai. Thinner, tinny, and overall much less rich tone.

I’ve attached a link to a diagram that illustrates my setup. I‘m using 2 TS cables from the line out on the MP11SE to the 2 front Audiobox inputs. Have I done something incorrect? Or is it possible I just need a better interface? The i2 is an entry level model I got for working with my iPad. It always performed fine except for this.
Thanks of any tips.

I know what’s going on. You’re feeding a left and right signals from a stereo signal into two lines which the interfaces thinks are two mono lines and it doubles each of them to both left and right output lines instead of panning them. I’ve already experienced that issue. Many interfaces don’t have the ability to pan input 1 and input 2 into left and right for direct monitoring. The only solution is to send the signal to the DAW which can properly pan them and then return the stereo signal back to the interface and the headphones.

In other words, you have to switch off direct monitoring on the interface and instead route the signal from input lines to computer where it’s properly panned into stereo and then back to the interface.

I have the Presonus Audiobox ... and I do not like its headphone output. It sounds thin and tinny, just as you describe it.

So I don't use it. The Presonus feeds an amplifier, and I plug in my headphones there where the sound is good.

CyberGene your advice worked perfectly. I turned off direct monitoring, stereo panned the input in AUM before sending back out and now it sounds 99% as good as the bare Kawai (that missing percent perhaps being due to the interface hardware mentioned by Mac above). It’s good enough for me and leagues better than before. 🙏

I guess you have a newer version of the Audiobox. Mine is around ten years old.

It sounds great when fed to monitors. But it sux with headphones plugged in.
