Another charming and interesting article in the NT Times. Includes info naming particular pieces and new recordings by pros.

You pianists may want to befriend a flautist, violinist and cellist and explore many of the classic symphonies at home. (A violinist could probably substitute for the flute player, but the result would lack a wind section. The piano substitutes for the brasses.)

I think that if you look up the symphonies of that time, most of them were first published as arrangements for small groups, not as orchestral pieces.
