I wouldn't be surprised if the ES9 isn't a portable version of the CN39. Same keyboard, hardware and software, but 2 speakers instead of 4.

Actually, the ES8 uses the HI-XL engine which is better (longer samples) than the PHI used in the CN27/37/29/39 series, and it already has the SK-5 piano samples that they introduced only now in the CN39.
True. We'd have to hear them side by side. It's possible the Onkyo audio tweaking is such that the CN39 might sound better, in spite of the sampling differences. Also for those looking for it, the ES8 is missing the bluetooth midi and audio capability of the CN39.

Yes, if you listen to these instruments just with their internal speakers, the CN39 with Onkyo speakers "could" sound better... But usually these are very subjective preferences... Maybe you would like more the ES8 speakers. Who knows... You should listen to both of them to judge yourself.

Another thing to notice is that both the CN37 and CN39 have 2 resonance effects that the ES8 doesn't have: "Undamped Strings Resonance" and "Cabinet Resonance". However these are 2 subtle effects that I am able to hear clearly only with good headphones (and when the values of these effects are set near their max). Personally I would have preferred longer samples and more velocity layers, but then I think the CN series would have competed too much with the more expensive CA models. Probably, when all the CA models will have at least the SK-EX Rendering Engine, then on all the CN models we will see the HI-XL engine instead of the PHI.

By the way, guys - what is "CN"? CA means "Concert Artist". But what about CN? "Concert Newbie" smile?

I searched for a clue even in the very old Kawai CN models documentation (I think the first Kawai CN model was from 2000!!), but there is no reference to the reason for those letters.

All we know is that since the first Kawai digital pianos, CA series has wooden keys, CN series has plastic keys (but of very very nice quality, I have to say). So, the A in the CA series could be not just for "Artist" but for "Advanced" keyboard too, while the N in CN could stand for "Normal" keyboard.

In the KDP/KCP series, the K probably stands for "Kids".

But, at the end I think they could very well be just some letters without a particular meaning...

Hmmmmmm ... maybe KDP stands for Kawai Digital Piano?
And KCP might be Kawai Concert Piano?
Too easy?

That would not make much sense to me, being that they are all Kawai, so you should have a 'K' before CA and CN too.

This is the second or third thread on what the Kawai initials on their models mean, I find that amusing (Kawai, are you listening?).

Just a few months ago, Kawai James had to step in to some debate to confirm that the "NV" in NV-10 did indeed stand for "Novus" and was not a random pairing of unrelated letters. The things that occupy up sometimes....

If NV stands for NoVus, then we could think that that CN stands just for CoNcert...

These are those questions that don't make me sleep well at night... I will complain with Kawai for my lack of sleep. laugh
