I've ordered a Kawai CA78 Polished Ebony, and I realize now that if I only pay $100 more, I can get the CA98 in Satin Black instead. The aesthetic is important to me, but then again I've heard so much good about the 98. Is it worth the upgrade? Is Polished Ebony important? I know obviously the finish shouldnt be a deciding factor, but then again, with such a pristine instrument, it feels like its sort of expected.
What would you all do?

I don't care about the finish, so the question for me is "is $100 worth the upgrade from a CA-78 to a CA-98?" Totally.

If you do care about the finish, the question is a bit different.

The difference is mainly in the soundboard, with which I was unimpressed when I tried both of these pianos early this year.
Given then choice I'd be satisfied with the CA78 ... and I'd require the polished finish. Without that the piano looks like it's finished with cheap shelving material. Blah.

Biases to take note of: I really don't want a CA-series piano. When I retire I'll be choosing between the N1X and the NV10.

Ok, thanks for the reply. If it makes any difference, my music room is situated in a loft floor above the garage. It's isolated, but it's only 40 sq meters, and with a rather low ceiling (ceiling starts to slope up around 120cm from the floor), so I feel like my music rooms acoustic isn't good enough to benefit from the superior sound engine.

Then again I might be wrong, and I might need a better sound engine to conpensate for the crappy acoustic

The sound engines are the same between the two. It's the speaker/soundboard setup that is different.

If you use headphones the sound is identical between the two.

I would go for the CA98 but this is my personal opinion and I believe that, for music, one cannot only rely on people's opinion.
If you still have time left, what I would do is to find a local dealer which has both CA78 and CA98 and try both, side by side, to get a personal opinion on the one you prefer.

To me, and again this was a personal feeling, I felt a big difference between those two, CA98 felt more "natural" and "alive" than CA78, and I believe this was due to the soundboard which, I believe, is not a pure marketing stuff.

However, you'll possibly realize that, to your ear, the CA78 sounds better, and there would be nothing wrong with that, on the opposite!

In short : try both yourself and if you realize that you prefer CA98 by far, then additional 100$ is worth spending.

Regarding headphones mode : sound is identital as stated above, since only speaker system/soundboard makes a difference between CA78 and CA98.

ps n°1 : on the CA98 there's an option to lower the volume from the speakers so you can have an higher master volume in order to have the effect of the soundboard even at low/mid volume. Without this option, a low master volume does not allow to "awake" the soundboard.

ps n°2 : I own the satin black CA98, and regarding Macmacmac's comment above, I disagree on the "cheap" aspect, I think it looks like a decent piano even in satin black, and that it is more in line with the rest of my appartment. Again, this is a personal opinion =)

Of course Eol is correct in everything he says, but this leads me to make a further proposal. After testing the CA98 and 78, if you decide you'd rather have the CA98, why push yourself into a bad compromise now? You obviously want the PE cabinet, and if you want the fully enveloping sound of the CA98 why not just save up the money to buy it a few months down the road? Even if it took you six months to earn the money, so what? I think it's reasonable to assume that you would keep the CA98 for at least five years, so why push yourself now into an unsatisfactory purchase?

You're probably going to list all the reasons why you have to buy sooner than immediately, but do yourself a favor and list all the reasons why you'd be smarter to wait until you got just what you wanted. Really, what's the big rush?

I'm getting marrier soon, and I want to use the piano to practise in a song for the wedding. I ended up paying for the CA78 today. I really wanted the sound board, but ultimately I know I would have been bothered without the polished ebony finish too. And also, it weighs more and is pre-assembled, which makes it much harder to move up my stairs at home. I'm sure I'll be plenty happy with the CA78 too
