I doubt anyone has played both. I haven’t seen smaller than an S5X yet from that series, in person. Have only played one S4, or it may have been the precursor S400. Have played a couple of really nice CF4 pianos, but that’s a completely different price range...

For model info, you could take the current info in the Piano Buyer for the S3X, but you’d probably have to go back to the red cover Piano Book for info on the S4.

Found a short article that explains the improvements on the S3X Piano Article
And of course the MSRP is about 5K more.

From what I remember of the S4, and they were available here for much longer than they were in the USA, it's a really warm and lyrical piano with great sustain and a very musical tone. The action is typical Yamaha quality, very controllable, and it had the highest quality hammer felts, strings, and soundboard available to Yamaha at the time of its inception.

The most obvious difference between the S4 and the C3, any C3 or C3X is that the S4 is a 6'3 scale and the C3 is a 6'1 scale. That doesn't necessarily mean at that small size difference that one will have longer bass strings than the other or be louder, or whatever, but they are a different design. The S4 also has a broad square tail and the C3 has a rounded tail, so there's more soundboard area in the S4. More soundboard area doesn't necessarily equal better quality, it's just a fact that the S4 has more area than the C3X.

The C3X is a far more refined piano than the C3, but I don't know if its as refined as the S4. The direct comparison to the S4 would now be the S3X, since the S4 is discontinued.

In Europe we don't think of the CF4 as the replacement for the S4 since they were made concurrently for about 6 years. The quality levels in Yamaha are the from lowest to highest G-series (only baby grands), CX series, SX series, and CF series, with the CF series being directly comparable to Steinway or Bösendorfer in price range.

Thank you joe80 and terminaldegree. I was looking at my Yamaha dealers’ website in my casual day-dreaming mode thinking if I were to upgrade, because you know, we only live once, I saw he had listed the S4BB. Still. I knew Yamaha is now producing the S3X and they’re making no more S4BBs. So I’m just wondering if I were to upgrade what would I be missing by buying the S4 instead of the S3X. It certainly seems the Yamaha S series aren’t that popular? Of course if he had a CF4 on the floor I’d be in big trouble. 😁

CF SX and CX are 3 different levels. CF > SX > CX, where CF6/ CFX in my opinion is not worse than Steinway D at all. SX has a much higher price than CX, so you can also take a look at Kawai SK series which are the same level as S but lower price.

Steinway B, 1890
Yamaha C3X TA2
Yamaha U1 SHTA
Roland FP-30

MSRP/SMP is tricky!

Overall the CF is out of my price range. I’m not comparing the S series to the CX series ( I already have a C series). I’m trying to compare a New S4BB to a New S3x. The Kawai dealer won’t give me crap for my Yamaha so I’m sticking with pianos sold by the Yamaha dealer. I really want to know if the new rim technology used in the S3X is worth the increased price over the S4BB.

I recently played an SX3 right next to a CFX. I was blown away with the SX3. I thought it was every bit the
Equal in sound in touch to the CFX. (Of course smaller and with those compromises). But in the way I have flipped for certain new Steinway Bs, even more than the brand new D right next to it

I was in my local Yamaha dealer about a month ago shopping for an AvantGrand. They had a CFX and an S7X there that the manager let me play as long as I wanted. I’m a humble beginner but it was clear that the S7X was something special. The build quality was outstanding, and the tone was beautiful. Based on that the S3X should be a great instrument.

Thank you for sharing your experience. My dealer usually has a big fall sale. I may just have to check them out. I’m gonna have to do self hypnosis to keep telling myself, I’m only looking I’m only looking! While the other side is whispering, “You only live once!”

I've not played an S4BB, but the S3X is on my short list for pianos if I get an acoustic grand. Incredible sound and feel for the money.

Now learning: Chopin C# minor Nocturne (posth) and C minor Prelude (big chords), Mozart Sonata in C K. 545
Instruments: Yamaha N1X, Kawai ES110, Roland GO:PIANO

By the way, my feeling is between the S4BB and the S3X, the differences between them would be so minimal as to make it come down to a few things:

1. The price - if you can't decide go for the lower priced piano.

2. If the price is the same, buy the newer piano.

3. If the price is the same or if money is no object, and you can decide, buy the piano you prefer.

Thank you. I’m guessing if he still has the S4BB, I’d have to order an S3X. I’m sure I’d fall in love with whichever of the two are sitting on the floor. 😀
