Yesterday - The Beatles - piano arrangement #2869995

I saw the film Yesterday last week and immediately felt like playing it on piano. There are a lot of piano arrangements of it but I had a hard time finding a more advanced version that sounded more like the original Beatles recording with the strumming guitar accompaniment so I made this arrangement.

Nappy, I agree about playing it yourself. I’m not sure how I would feel without the midi, but with it, I find the bass a little repetitive with note, chord, chord, chord. Maybe this would be ok actually played.

Thanks for the feedback! I will have to try and invest more time in making a recording. I have 3 kids who play piano so my piano time is constrained and the time I do get I mostly spend working out these arrangements.

The bass is somewhat repetitive but I believe that's how the original recording goes with the guitar so I might blame Paul McCartney for that smile
I agree it would sound much better played by a human so looks like I have some practicing to do.

Yes, the original had repetitive bass but a violin was added to add depth to the sound.

Those are great arrangements. I also found quite a few nice advanced arrangements as well but I couldn't find one that sounded more like the original Beatles recording. I guess my arrangement is more of a piano transcription.

The interesting question with Yesterday has always involved the second chord, which is a vii chord in the key of F. In standards this chord is usually a half diminished chord (E minor 7 flat 5) because that is how the chord occurs diatonically. But McCartney's melody in that second bar is outining a D melodic minor scale, so the appropriate chord is E-7, not E-7b5, and I believe that is what McCartney plays on the acoustic guitar. (He actually plays a straight E- chord, and keep in mind he usually tunes this guitar down a whole step for this tune, so it looks like an F#- chord on youtube.)

However, when the string quartet enters on the 2nd verse, they play an E-7b5 chord on the second bar, which adds a really nice dark flavor. And at that point, the acoustic guitar is low in the mix, so there is no conflict there. However, there is still a glaring conflict between the strings and the melody, which occurs on the word "not" in the line "I'm not half the man I used to be". Didn't stop it from being the most covered song in history, though, and I think it was still the right call for the string arrangement.

That's really interesting Wes! I tried playing it with the E7b5 and it sounded weird on piano. Wonder why it works better with strings?

Another interesting thing I found about Yesterday is the opening notes to the word yesterday. Almost all arrangements have it as G-F-F. Even the Beatles score book has it as G-F-F but when I hear the song it clearly sounds like F-F-F to me. On piano G-F-F sounds better that's why I have it that way in my arrangement.

Intriguing post. Listening closely to those first three notes one the word "yesterday" (and then "suddenly"), it does sound like FGG to me, on verses one and two. But then--interestingly--after the bridge, on the third verse, the notes are AEF. Weird--I had never thought to question those notes. Check it out. The E is the hardest to note hear, because it's softer. Then after the second bridge, he goes back to the way it was at the beginning.

By the way, I'm referring to the original version from the "Help" album. Is it possible you are listening to another version? McCartney has multiple versions on utube, and there's no telling how many aberations of the original melody there could be on those.
