Another interesting article in the NY Times - a critic's account of the performance of Messaien's Catalogue d'Oiseaux by Pierre Aimard on Jul 13

well I think someone should do a blind test to see how many people not knowing this music would relate it to birds or even any particular region of France. Actually I am not sure I can recognize one piece from another one. We are certainly reaching absurdity ...

Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. Messaien's "Catalogue d'Oiseaux" is rarely performed, so when it is, it's an event. All of Messaien's music is "difficult" to listen to for those unfamiliar with it...as is true of many modern composers. If it's not for you, then so be it.

My comment was not so much about the music itself (which i admit is not my daily treat) but more about the lack of descriptive characteristics. That Messiaen liked birds and decided to title his cycle with names of specific species of specific french regions why not. Thats seems like an excellent idea. That Messiaen and it seems the writer believe that the music is actually descriptive of the birds themselves and futhermore of the particular ambiance and perfum of these regions is .... well i let everybody put its own appreciation.
