One could say that most if not all of it applies to music in general.

Of course it is; and my answer was: academic educational methodologists - a terrible force, if you give them the will! Especially if they aren't jazz musicians.

Sorry but I find your ‘especially if they are not jazz musicians’ to imply a superiority of jazz over classical training. It is the coin flip side of some classical musicians who consider themselves superior to jazz. Both views are incorrect: we are all musicians with individual strengths and weaknesses; some of those are from how we are taught and some are personal. I hope I have misinterpreted your reference to jazz in this context.

For most of the attached article you can substitute ‘classical’ for ‘jazz’. ..., and that also should apply to a teacher who is academically trained..... my teacher with a masters in performance learns from her students as well as doing continued individual learning. Academic education is not a negative to learning or to teaching

Yes, I precisely mean the superiority of jazz over classical training; but this is due to the very cleare heading:
Beyond the Music: What Jazz Teaches Us
If we were talking about Beethoven's sonatas, the words jazz and improvisation would not have been mentioned at all.
dogperson, try to find on the Internet jazz recordings of the article authors ; because I wasn't lucky ...

BTW , I first encountered the phenomenon that the conductor of Illinois University Big Band was a completely classical musician - violist- professor John Garvey ( and I was also a violist in the past. ), when they were visiting the Soviet Union in 1969. If we take into account the level of the players there - Cecil Bridgewater, Howie Smith and others , the question is how great the contribution of a classical musician, even a professor, to the level of a jazz orchestra can be.
