Hi all,

I've come across this used Estonia baby grand, and I went to see it today but couldn't locate the serial.
I like the sound and tone actually. But I couldn't see the serial anywhere near the pinblock or under hammers.
Is the number in the picture the serial number? It says 0034.
If so, it is made before 1998? (which is the year the owner bought the piano first hand).
The size is about 5'3 when I measured it; and I couldn't find any info about any Estonia that is this size.
I am sending a technician this week but wanted to hear what others had to say!
Thank you.

That seems to be a serial number for 1996, before the acquisition by Dr. Laul.

Yes. This model was discontinued sometime around 1998, if memory serves.

Oh wow!
Thank you so much.
So little info about it online!
I hope my technician will also know some more about it.
Do you think for this piano, in good condition, paying around $4000 Canadian is a fair price?

If it's not still a Soviet quality model...

Very possibly. It was a huge improvement over the Soviet era but it is also not comparable to the Estonia piano made by the mid - 2000's. The flaws were spotty and inconsistent. Make sure it is examined.

Good luck!

Thank you so much smile
I’m excited to hear what the technician has to say about it tomorrow, because I haven’t been able to find out anything else. I wouldn’t have even learnt the manufacture year if I hadn’t asked here!

I just saw one the identical piano this morning near Langley, B.C. . It was located in an incredibly beautiful, multi million dollar home and was perfectly maintained. The owners are very good players and love it. Apparently its been used in several movies. They originally paid around 10k and pianos of same vintage, from my experience, sell for about same today. You could be on to a very good deal, but have it checked out first. Contrary what people say, these smallish Estonia grands sounded great from the very beginning although built quality was not nearly same as today. Recommend to get at least a torque test done on pinblock and few other things. Then take it from there. Price sounds like great deal to me. The owners I met today, said they wouldnt change it for anything in world. And they certainly have the money to do so. Thats a pretty strong endorsement but Ive come across a few other cases like that before.
Good luck!
Norbert

Hi Norbert, I realise this is a rather late reply as I hadn't checked the forum in a while.
Indeed I've had it checked out by a professional technician and I do love everything about it in my home.
However...I remember I had chatted with you, (or someone else from your shop) when I was shopping around to buy a used grand. It was one of the most unpleasant phone calls for me; the judgemental, condescending tone was very very memorable to say the least. Total opposite to your forum posts.

Shukiki:
Very sorry to hear you had this experience, as owner I need to take responsibility for everything happening in my business! By same token I had several employees over the years who turned out less than ideal and once I I fired one on the spot when overhearing him coming in on my day off. So, my apologies again to you! At same time I’m very happy you found the right piano and at a good price. Enjoy and feel free to call me anytime personally if you have any further questions or concerns about your instrument! Always here to help!
Norbert😊
