So now the Yahama sounds more like Yamaha?

A freshly tuned piano is a nice thing indeed!

I had my Sauter 130 tuned on Monday morning. Before
she started I played a section of a piece (where tuning
was just a bit lively crazy) Then I played chords, octaves
5ths, etc.,explaining what I did not like.
The result was an amazing sounding piano.I realised just how good she really is as a technician.

A well tuned Yamaha can be an excellent sounding piano J&J ,so enjoy !
I intend next year to have a full regulation and perhaps
voicing. So it will be expensive !
Sorry what I meant to say was my PIANO was going to
have a full regulation.(although no doubt I could do with one too !)

Sounds great.

I've had piano tuners - and that's what they do - tune. Maybe adjust something really obvious.

But my technician gives it a service. He has a quick play (he's a pianist), tunes, then pulls the action out and spends nearly as long mainly voicing, but I notice he adjusts the regulation in places as well. That's his norm.

He did mention last time that I could consider a full regulation at one of the next couple of services, So maybe first service next year. It'll cost more, but I think it will be good - it's 7 years old next month.

My tech does tuning, voicing and regulation adjustments each time. My piano is 7 years old so the regulation was in good shape, especially for me. He said it didn’t need a full blown regulation at this time. Some day it will need the whole six hour process but not for quite some time with my playing style and practice frequency.
I hope by having my piano tuned, voiced, and regulated twice a year, I can postpone major work for a long time.

Sauter prescribes a regulation and voicing every other
year.Perhaps what they mean is look after the piano?

Let's hope that that's what they mean. "Prescribing" a regulation and voicing every other year makes little sense without knowing the environment the piano is in, how much use it gets, and the "quality" of that use.

Well Bruce,I am sure they are not the only ones !
It is a general booklet for all Sauter models- uprightS
grands etc (Masterclass series,Omega grands) Once before I mentioned this with Sauter and I was accused of a number of things !
Unnecessary illogical suggestion again ???

I thank you NobleHouse.,Yes It is my "gem" and I love
the singing qualty of its sound and its keen response
but for those with an "axe to grind" or are friends of
those individuals ., Sauter still seems to be a target ?
I suppose that is really sad !!!

I could only guess what type of regulation Sauter means when it recommends it’s piano’s should have voicing and regulation done every two years? It sounds much like some technicians recommend, frequent, less drastic adjustments done each time the piano is tuned. It would seem easier on the piano itself, but I don’t have equipment or “test pianos” to prove that point. But my Yamaha has always been really stable so I’ll stay with a frequent regular maintenance plan.
I’m sure your Sauter now sounds particularly lovely after it’s tuning Monday.

You do not know anything ! Do you think my technician
does not ALSO touch up every time she comes !
That is what every good technician does !

She is a Steinways trained technician and she is extremely well qualified, she knows her work.
Yes SAUTER is a 2nd to top tier manufacturer and thier
dealer has excellent technicians.
The booklet is a translation from German so I do not
even remember if the actual word was "regulation"
or if that was MY interpretation of what was written
but what I would REALLY like to know is WHY this is
so IMPORTANT that Brucie has to imply something
negative !

I am sorry J&J for reacting in such a way to you.
You have a wonderful fairly large Japanese made Yamaha grand piano and it must be sounding lovely
now that it has been tuned and regulated.
So best wishes. LB

Some people are less concerned - or don't notice. I play people's pianos at times and eventually ask - when was it tuned last? Most can't remember, it's so long ago. But they're quite happy to play it like that.

I have mine serviced 2, maybe 3 times a year - 4 times a year for the first 2 years.

My Mum bought a YAMAHA YU1S at the same time - I would go there to play it and ask "when was this serviced last?". She'd say "When you got it done last".

I put it on the same service schedule as mine - so he'd do Mum's then come across to me twice a year.

But Mum said she couldn't really hear or feel the difference.

The same back when we were children - we had an old OverDamper piano, quite slow repetition and a bit shrill - though tuned every year. I would play the school piano or my teacher's piano - and the home piano just stood out as mediocre after coming back home. But Mum was a better pianist than I ever was, and played it happily every night - pre-TV (late '60s for us), after the children were in bed, she'd go and play. I remember going to sleep with Beethoven, Bach, Mussorgsky et al.

LadyBird - I certainly meant nothing harmful or derogatory. I don’t own a Tier 1 piano such as Sauter. I was just imagining what was meant when you said Sauter recommends regulation every two years. I don’t know who your piano technician is and certainly meant no criticism of her work because I have to my knowledge never played a piano she’s maintained. I guess when the discussion turns to Sauter I’ll keep my mouth shut because I know nothing.

Very true. It seems many casual piano owners rarely, if ever, have their piano tuned. It is the last thing on their list for some reason.

Over the years, I have tuned several pianos for friends and relatives for free, just to gain the experience, and help them out. They were absolutely thrilled with the results, but I stopped doing the free tunings (or any tunings for others) because it is just too time consuming. It takes me about two hours to completely tune a piano from A0 to C88, and that is if it doesn't require a pitch raise (tune it twice). Plus, I always warn them there is a risk of string breakage due to age and condition of the strings, but I never broke a string. In fact, I have never broken a string while tuning; but I have broken a string while playing (ouch! Not a musical sound smile ).

You are right, BSP, some people are not too concerned whether their piano is in tune or not. I guess they get used to the outoftuneness and it is not a priority for them.
