If I ask a student/parent can they change, I'm usually prepared for them to say no, and they (should) know it. In that case, whatever was the situation that I was trying to optimize by changing them, it's back to the drawing board. But I needed to ask to find out that it wasn't an option. Conversely, I don't mind if they ask. How else will they know that Fri at 5 student was in fact looking for someone to trade with? On the other hand, if I have to say no, I'm expecting them to accept that answer.

I used the same formula for twenty years and it worked like a charm with everyone happy. I charge by the month and there are no "make up" lessons for any lessons missed by the student. However on the months where there are five lesson days, that fifth lesson is a "free" lesson or if any lessons have been missed by the student, it's a "make up" lesson. In all these years I've never had a complaint.
There's a subtle psychology behind that "free lesson". For some reason most people focus on the idea that there's a "free lesson" rather than the fact I don't do make up lessons. However, as I reduced the size of my studio and spent more time composing, I became a little more lax with my adult students and would occasionally offer a make up lesson on a Saturday. smile
