Kawai CN37 now or wait for the CN39? #2862798

I'm looking for a digital piano for my young children and myself to learn, I like the CN37WS but see the CN39 is coming out soon (Possibly 3-6 months based on the conversation had with a local Kawai rep).

There's currently an end of financial year sale in Australia putting the CN37 at $2300. I assume the CN39 will be around $2900. Would it be worth the wait for the few new features of the CN39 or should I just take the plunge and enjoy the discounts?

I am concerned about the "clicking" issue some people experience with the CN37, though my local dealer said in 10 years he hasn't had a single issue reported regarding that.

Other minor features probably wouldn't even be used, such as being able to push bluetooth music to the piano speakers. They did upgrade the speakers to Onkyo in the CN39 however.

Thanks,
xelfer

I think you should go for the CN37 because now you can find it at discounted prices and, honestly, I don't think the CN39 it's worth those added money. It has a new piano sound (SK-5) and Onkyo speakers (but I think the previous speakers are good enough). The sound engine is exactly the same. The key action is the same. The chassis is the same. The left panel is the same. The new piano sound is nice, but from what I listened to, I think I would mostly use the "SK Concert Grand" that the CN37 has too.

And, personally, I would not wait 2-3 months just for those 2 extra features (without forgetting that you should spend 3-400$ more).

Hello magicpiano,

Just to clarify some points regarding the CN37 vs CN39:

Correct on both counts. The Onkyo technology also expands to the main CPU board and amplifier board.

True, however I understand that the Shigeru Kawai sounds have been improved.

Correct, although the key-lid cover handle has changed to a different colour (I prefer the new appearance).

The layout is the same, however the display has changed from LCD to OLED, giving a crisper, brighter appearance.

Finally, it's important to note that Bluetooth Audio has also been added to the existing Bluetooth MIDI functionality.

For more information regarding all of the changes and improves in the CN39 (compared to the CN37), please refer to this post.

Personally, I believe the CN39 is a worthy successor to the CN37, which was already a very good digital piano - especially for the price. Indeed, I gather that the new CN39 price is more or less the same as that of the CN37 when it was introduced.

Kind regards,
James

Hello xelfer, welcome to the forum.

Regarding your query, I don't believe you can go far wrong with either piano. As noted above, I personally prefer the CN39 due to the various improvements and new features (Onkyo technology is a big change in my opinion).

I've also been a believer in buying the best you can (comfortably) afford; regardless of whether that's a car, TV, holiday, piano, whatever. The discounts on the previous generation CN models are very attractive, though, and would allow you to purchase a piano very soon, rather than needing to wait for the latest models to become available.

Best of luck with decision either way.

Kind regards,
James

Hi Kawai James,

I think the Bluetooth Audio is a nice little add-on. Thanks for the info. wink

However, I noticed there exist on the market some small cheap bluetooth devices that you can connect to the LINE-IN of the CN37 (or other digital pianos with LINE-IN) and offer exactly the same functionality. And of course you can always use a classic audio cable to directly connect the output of some audio device (for example: the line-out of a notebook) to the CN37 LINE-IN (and I think this is always the most reliable solution). The new OLED display is nice, but it's just cosmetic change, I think.

Don't take me wrong, at the same price (or for max 50-100$ more) of course I would choice the CN39, because it's a little better product. But being that actually you can find the CN37 at a very nice discounted price (3-400$ less) and that the CN39 is not yet available in the stores, I think who wants to buy a digital piano "now" in that price range cannot go wrong with the CN37. In my opinion, currently, the CN37 has the best value for money of all the other digital pianos on the market (Yamaha and Roland included).

P.S.: I have a question for you: have you listened to the speakers of the CN39 and really noticed such a big improvement on the CN37 speakers, playing with the same piano sound on both of them? In the reviews I read always good words on the CN37 speakers...

Hello magicpiano,

I agree, at the discounted price, the CN37 is very difficult to beat.

Regarding the sound hardware and speaker systems, yes, I have been able to hear the CNx7 and CNx9 side-by-side during product check meetings. In my opinion, the new models offer improved clarity and less harshness at higher volumes.

Kind regards,
James

Thanks everyone! I called the last dealer I could find in Australia with the CN37WS (white satin) that I wanted and they had one left but they were still chasing payment for it from someone else who wanted it. They checked, and ended up offering me the piano instead. So yay, I'm looking forward to it arriving and starting this journey smile $2299 delivered (AUD) is a pretty good deal I think!

Mine is arrived today! Is a CN37 Rosewood. I spent some hours to assemble it (I was afraid I could scratch something, so I was very slow), so I have yet to play with it, but the look is fantastic! An elegant dark brown, with golden pedals and details. The keyboard is unbelievable, it doesn't feel like plastic at all, and the action is so nice!
