Attended a "Pianobuddies" Piano Party... lots of fun!

As I mentioned in another thread yesterday, I attended another "Pianobuddies" Piano Party/Social event last Sunday in Fayetteville, Ga. The "Pianobuddies" group was started by Sam Smith, a fellow PW forum member and his wife Laurie. It seems to keep growing in membership, and fun! In fact, some of the attendees/guests there don't even play the piano; they were there to listen and join in the fun (some were spouses or friends of the players)! smile

I got to hear Sam play a few Beethoven pieces, and his performance was fantastic! And, all the other players, piano teachers, advanced players, and beginners, all did a magnificent job! What impressed me the most was how much joy and happiness was expressed when they were seated at the piano playing their chosen pieces and arrangements, no matter the level of their abilities. We all inspired each other in some form or fashion.

And, although many of the players were formally trained, they made me feel welcome and appreciated with my backwoods, hillbilly piano playing style! Which I honestly think they liked (I hope)! smile

I got permission from the group to share some pictures... the smiles on their faces reveal what a great time we all had.

Oh yea, our gracious host, Ruth, wanted us to remove our shoes to help keep the carpet clean in her piano room, hence the sock and bare feet. smile

Oh yea, here is a group pic, although all the attendees were not in the group pic; some were in the hallway and adjacent room. smile

I think I posted the limit of pics in the original thread... couldn't get this one to post for some reason.

Oh, this looks like so much fun! I wish there was something like that here in Tallahassee, FL. The notion about pianists here (mostly students from FSU) is that they pretty much keep it to themselves smirk

No, Lady Bird, I'm in the first picture. The second pic down, with the cap on, is Sam Smith, another PW forum member. The 3rd pic down is our host, Ruth. I didn't use the names of all the attendees, but perhaps I should have. I did mention to them that I would not use their names on the forum, just the pictures.

Thus far, the "Pianobuddies" have been taking turns having the piano parties at other member's homes, if their home is large enough. It looks like the group is growing so that we may have to find a larger venue to have the piano parties. That's a good thing. smile

Rick is in the first picture with the big laugh. I'm the guy with the hat - I have to protect my bald head.

The group has definitely grown and taken on a life of its own, which is a good thing. We're all having a good time!

What a wonderful piano party. Thank you Rickster for sharing and thank you Sam for letting Rickster share pictures of your lovely home and beautiful piano that brought everyone so much fun. I see from the fallboard it’s a Yamaha. May I ask which model?

Hi j&j,

It was indeed a newish Yamaha baby grand in ebony polish; it was beautiful, sounded good and played well. I did not look inside to see what model it was. Judging from the size, I'd say it was 5 feet or so, maybe 5'3" or perhaps 5'5" (?). It was definitely under 6'. I have a 5'8" and a 5'10" baby grand and it looked smaller than either of them. I kind of wish I had looked inside to see what model it was but didn't want to be too intrusive.

The key-touch did feel slightly different than my pianos at home (a little firmer maybe?); but that could be due to the newness of it. Just goes to show that all pianos are a little different from each other in some ways.

But it was fun to be able to play a different piano, and a nice one! smile

Not my piano or house. I think it's a Yamaha GC2. Plays well and holds a tune well. Very even action. 3 kids took lessons on that piano, now the mom is learning to play. Nice size for the room - we spilled over into the hallway, but no problem hearing everything very well.

Thank you Sam and Rickster for the info. Being a Yamaha fan myself it’s cool to try out Yammys at a party. I did check your profile Sam and noticed the 1927 Bechstein so I wondered.

I'm so sorry I missed this one! I have been to a few of these gatherings (they are a little over an hour's drive for me), and it's so much fun to meet people of all playing levels and hear what they're working on. Laurie and Sam have been great organizers of this--they prove that all it takes is a couple of enthusiastic people to get it started!
