Hello,

This is my first post here. I read a lot of similar discussions and still am being indecisive. So I though of posting here and getting some more opinions.

My initial plan was to buy:
(Let's call this option 1)

VPC1 - 1091.60
K&M 18950 - 100.84
Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen - 104.20
DT880 600 ohms - 142.02
iLoud Micro Monitors - 234.45

All of the prices above are in euros before tax and not including shipping (should be 40 euros from Thomann)

Schiit Modi 3 Headphone Amp - price should be around 100 dollars

So let's say around 1800 euros before tax.

Than after reading (a lot) about monitors I thought of getting the Neumanns KH120A with stands for 1057.98, but that would bring the above total to around 2600 euros excl. VAT.

That brought the price up so that it competes with some really good digital pianos and even the K15 upright.

So that leads me to option 2:

CA78 - 2315.13
DT880 600 ohms -142.02

All of the prices above are in euros before tax and not including shipping (should be 40 euros from Thomann)

Schiit Modi 3 Headphone Amp - price should be around 100 dollars

For a total of around 2550 euros without tax.

And...

Option 3:

Kawai K15 Upright Acoustic for 2688.24 euros without shipping and without tax.

Due to living really, really far away from good music stores I can't test any of the above instruments, monitors and headphones.

So, what do you guys think? Is the VPC1 with iLouds good enough?

I have some worries about the VPC1, is it possible to practice and eventually perform at full speed pieces that have fast repeating notes, also my hands are not that big and I often need to play higher up on the keys and I heard that is a possible issue with the VPC1. How big are those two issues, are they noticeable or do you need to compare it to other instruments side by side to notice. Basically I need to know is that a deal-breaker or not, in the sense that if I develop bad technique or If I can't play well enough it would definitely not be the VPC1's fault but mine.

Please let me know what you think about the KH120A, should I get them over the iLouds? Obviously they are gonna sound much better, but I'm only willing to pay for them if they are AMAZING and can approximate the sound and feel of a grand piano (with pianoteq).

Would the CA78 be much better than the VPC1 for developing good technique and translate better to a real grand? I have the same question about the K15.
Is the K15 a better option than those previously mentioned digitals? My main worry is the action, so would you pick the real upright action of the K15 over the RM3 Grand II and GF2?

In my head it's K15's action < RM3 Grand II < GF2. Is that True?

Sorry for the long post, and please help me tip the scales of each piano. I really don't know what to buy, And as for the Yamaha's and Roland's, after a lot of reading I have decided that Kawai's have better actions.

Best Regards

Aren't you missing something? There's nothing in that list that produces any sound!
What equipment and software will you use to produce piano sounds?

Hello xhivo, welcome to the forum.

I would not recommend spending any money without play-testing (or at least trying to play-test) these models first.

May I ask where you are based, please (country/city)?

Kind regards,
James

xhivo,

It might be useful for you to let us know your level of expertise as a player.

Are you a beginner ? Intermediate ? Expert ?

Regardless, If you wish to play the piano …. why not just get a piano and forget about all sorts of electronic stuff to "make" a piano sound.

I would discard the VPC1 option as too complicated and full of potential for disappointment with all the pieces.

I would opt for the CA78 digital and not the K15 acoustic just because I consider the sound quality of the CA78 a bit better than the K15 and no maintenance is needed with the digital.

I would agree with Kawai James that it is a bad idea to buy something without trying it yourself.

1) You are missing a VST software. Add around 200 to options 1's price. Provided you have a capable computer handy. If not, add another 600+.

2) I would recommend against 600Ω headphones. They are difficult to drive, necessitate a rather powerful amp and the sonic benefits over 250Ω are placebo-territory. Get the 250Ω variant and be able to ditch the magni. I have the 250Ω DT880 and would recommend it unless you are a basshead. Wrong can for that. laugh

3) Be aware that proper placement is critical when you buy monitors, consider your space requirement and willingness to spend time fiddling.

As for the action: VPCs action is heavy, esp at the back of the key. Some people like it, some don't, some just deal with it (like me).
Take KawaiJames advice to heart: playtest to before yo buy, if at all possible.

Personally, given the space (I didn't have it), I would opt for the CA78. neat AiO package, no need to fiddle around, no need for expensive maintenance 2x a year.

I would only go acoustic if I had the space and money for a higher end one.
