This is super trivial, but I'm getting worked up over it.

Here is someone on reddit playing (rather awfully) Chopin's "Aeolian Harp" Etude.

I think it's sped up in some places. What do you think?

I don't know why this is getting me worked up so much, feel free to psychoanalyze me if necessary.

Perhaps the phrase "too much time on your hands" is applicable.

Perhaps, Rally...perhaps.

Regretting posting this already, sorry for wasting people's time.

This is a completely achievable tempo so IMO it is not sped up. The technique requires lots of rolling elbow motion. Long pinkies are a help too. The piano desperately needs tuning.

Best regards,

Deborah

I agree it is completely achievable, but even with the bad tuning and audio quality, it sounds unnatural and rather like a midi file in some places.

Funny, I was referred to this exact thread of yours from reddit. Small world.

It's real enough, but needs a lot of work! Irregularity of tempo is nothing more than lack of control on the part of the pianist.

If you watched the video he posted yesterday of the Revolutionary Etude, you'd be much more suspicious of this one.

In any case...

Update - the poster of the video, who I've just ended an argument with, just revealed to me he's 14 years old. 14 years old. The kid's not even half my age. I feel quite awful now, regardless of the validity of his videos...

Don't try to compete with kids. Here is an 11yo playing La Campanella, which is a grade harder than 25/1:

Do you know of any job openings?

We can check if Phoebe Pan needs a page turner.

Not likely though. At her age, she should be able to memorize music the first time she sees it wink

It isnt THAT bad..yes tempo is awfully fast, and uneven rhythms but no obvious wrong notes from what I can tell (disclaimer: I dont play this Etude, but have attempted sightreading it a few times when bored). There is much work to be done but I have definitely heard worse renditions of this piece at live meet ups (including where one barely hears the pinky finger melody).

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!

I just got OWNED by a 14-year-old: said kid posts video of himself playing the Etude with a timer

This will go down as the most embarrassing moment of my life.

Well, at least you admitted you met your match in a visible timer. A number of months ago on Reddit, a fellow posted a video of himself playing a piece at a fast tempo. Because he sat down and stood up from the bench in a very fast way, immediately, there were claims the video was fake and sped up, with the awkward sitting/standing claimed as evidence of the fakery. In response, the gentleman then posted a video of himself showing his clock with a second hand, putting said clock on the piano, and playing the piece even faster than the first time! You'd think that would shut up the naysayers, eh? Nope. I guess some people don't accept flimsy evidence like this! (I guess it was a fake clock!) wink laugh

Haha. I'm not going to go there, I think I've had quite enough drama for one night. Although one positive to come out of this, I brushed up the Aeolian Harp Etude myself. Nice piece to have in the active repertoire.

I just posted on Reddit and asked the OP there how he slowed down his stopwatch so much wink laugh

Even Valentina Lisitsa was accused of being fake. I think that stopped when she posted her concert videos.

I certainly hope I don't give off the impression that I think anything played at a crazy tempo is fake. As mechanical as Lisitsa's playing sounds to me, I never once thought her videos were sped up, and the same thing goes for Richter's crazy recording of Chopin's Op. 10 no. 4. Richter's speed is unearthly, but I never once thought it was sped up.

I discussed this whole drama with a pianist friend of mine. He said he never thought the Aeolian Harp Etude was sped up, but that he did agree with me that a previous video of the Revolutionary Etude made by the kid was indeed sped up. I just happened to make the logical fallacy of assuming B was sped up because A was, and, well, paid the price with public humiliation and some lovely hateful remarks.

In any case...I think the real issue was how I approached the matter, and, perhaps more importantly, what the heck I was doing getting carried away on reddit when I really should've been practicing.
