Apparently the Lalique Steinway in the vault is Hamburg made Yes, I see that you are correct. I cannot believe a Hamburg made it into “The Vaultâ€!? Before long Europeans are going to start thinking Hamburgs are almost as good as New York models.

I think it is universally accepted that European pianos are better then american pianos.

I appreciate NY Steinway pianos as wonderful pianos of course. Hamburg Steinways are graded higher (by Fine)but surely it's the music a pianist makes that's important and I do not mean by a professional pianist. What does it matter if the piano is Hailun or Steinways? An artist can create out of feathers or beads or by playing a harmonica ! BUT pianos in a vault with those awful lights is just so lifeless. The pianos are musical instruments. We could argue about what is art and get no where. Is art a" chocolate boxie " picture or is it a pretty perfume bottle ? Is an expensive neckless a greater piece of art than the perfume bottle because it is more expensive. What about Mozart's Marriage of Figaro ?

I wonder how the acoustics are in that vault. I would not be surprised if pianos sound very nice in there.

I have to disagree. Just because us normal folks cant buy/afford it, the art status does not get taken away.
Like I said before, the fact you don't like/appreciate it has nothing to do with it being art.
Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory or performing artifacts (artworks), expressing the author's imaginative, conceptual ideas, or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power.
If you don't think this is art I don't know what is!
Yes but I think it is also more than this!

If I had the money, would they spray the Pictures at an Exhibition piano plain black? Joking aside, it does appear to be beautifully done. I can imagine it in a Mussorgsky museum, or musical instrument museum. Maybe someone will buy it and donate it. I can't imagine too many people wanting it as their daily beater, but I could be wrong...

In that case, even a higher quality made europeen Steinway mean nothing to be there. Why don't they organise secret auctions for their clients there?

SHHHHHHHH, I asked Steinway France why Lalique Steinways and some special and limited edition models are Hamburg made but not New York, and they said just because german Steinway workers skills are much more higher than american workers. But SHHHHHHHH...!

We'd better not let it be known that some of the world's finest pianos are made in New York! It could damage the Hamburg snob appeal!

You can hear in piano recordings made by worldwide artists of all times. Most of them were recorded on Steinway pianos. And most of Steinway pianos used in recording were Hamburg Steinway, because NY Steinways are too fine to be chosen, I guess

Although most of the Steinways around here are from New York, I have tuned a considerable number of Hamburg Steinways from several periods. I think the difference was greater in the past than it is presently, after they have been properly set up, which is not always the case.

In western society we put art in an art gallery to contemplate on it.We go to the symphonic hall to hear sublime music to give meaning to us. With other so called " ethnic people" art serves a social function. It used for dancing even wearing clothes. For protest music etc. This thing where pianos are kept in this place is not art it is just marketing by Steinways for the very wealthy. These pianos are not art even though they have fancy cabinets Art and it's meaning is about life nothing more.
"This thing" is just a piano showroom with a gimmick(locked door) and unusual lighting. Otherwise, it's just like a normal showroom. Similar to the second floor of the old Steinway Hall showroom where they kept the best Bs and Ds and one had to request to go to. I think some of the pianos in the vault are quite beautiful(and some like Pictures at an Exhibition or Fazioli's new peacock design are not successful) and that the art case pianos by makers like Steinway, Boesendorfer, Fazioli, etc. definitely qualify as works of (furniture)art. All the great piano makers have been making art case pianos for over a hundred years.

(continued from previous post) Not all art is in an art gallery as you said in your post. Some art ends up on the walls in people's homes and furniture art is also often in homes.
If these pianos can be afforded only by "very wealthy" people they should not be criticized for buying these pianos for the furniture appeal.

Wealthy peoples who buy artworks to own in their personal home, they just don’t care how and what other people think or to be criticized. They better don’t own artworks if they don’t like to be criticized.
