I'm looking for recommendations for a good Joplin book of the original music (nothing watered down or "enhanced"). Suggested fingerings are OK, but not necessary. Ideally it would be something that lies flat as well, so I wouldn't have to make photocopies of specific sheets. I'm only interested in rags (not songs, opera, and the other stuff).

I've become skeptical of what's out there recently when I realized my old ragtime book has a version of The Entertainer which is slightly watered down in a few places. Any favorites you'd like to recommend?

"Scott Joplin: Complete Piano Works" basically has everything.

Hrm. Top 5 rags is tough, but my top 5 for this 5 minutes is:

* Magnetic Rag
* The Easy Winners
* Solace
* Gladiolus Rag
* Pine Apple Rag

I agree, the New York Public Library edition of "Complete Works of Scott Joplin" is the one to get. As far as his piano rags go, it is the last word.

However, there is another work: his 'ragtime opera,' "Treemonisha." When I bought this book in hardcover some 40 years back, it was put out by the same publisher. In the present century, there are some recordings online of, at least, excerpts.

So, favorites. I like
Pineapple Rag
Solace
Bethena
Peacherine Rag

I have the Dover edition of 'Complete Piano Rags.' Such things as Solace are not included, but I have that in another book (not dedicated to Scott Joplin works)
current favourites (well, probably):
- Palm Leaf Rag
- Pineapple Rag
- The Easy Winners
- Eugenia
- Swipesy (nice start point, falls easily under the fingers....)
but tbh they are all good to play although with varying degrees of difficulty.

regards
Pete

A great book of rags I have is "Scott Joplin ; Collected Piano Works" by The New York Public Library. It contains 51 rags by Joplin including some collaborative works. It includes all the favorites such as;
- Palm Leaf Rag
- Reflection Rag
- Magnetic Rag
- Stoptime Rag
- PIne Apple Rag
- Gladiolus Rag
- The Ragtime Dance
- The Chrysanthemum
- The Cascades
- The Entertainer (the piece that introduced me to Joplin)
- Elite Syncopations
and of course the Maple Leaf Rag.

It does not contain "Retumbante" which is another favorite of mine which I got a copy through another enthusiast years ago.

I find much of his work works beautifully if you let go the strict 4/4 tempo of ragtime and let the music dictate the pace. Sublime stuff :-)

I just found another book you might find useful. "The Golden Encyclopedia of Ragtime - 1900 - 1974" from Memory Lane Series published by Charles Hansen Educational Music and Books (New York). It contains 100 ragtime piano solos by several composers including Joplin. This has " The Frogs Leg Rag" by Joplin and Joseph Lamb's "Topliner Rag" - both fantastic pieces!
