The piece was first written in 1892 version. I think the early Rachmaniov pieces are more chordal based. It was written again much later.

Rachmaninov rewrote it in 1940. I have put a version as I think it's interesting the style is different.

I think it really needs to go faster. Most of the YT performances are around 4:00-4:50.

Ok thanks. I have 2 more weeks until I play it for piano meetup. On a grand piano is it easier to play the bass louder than on an upright piano or does it depend on the piano.

The melody does need to be more prominent compared to the chordal accompaniment. When there is a melody note in the LH followed by two chords in the RH(lke in the beginning) I think the second chord should be softer. Remember if the dynamic is, for example mf, you can play the melody f and the accompaniment p. Since I think this piece is not easy to memorize, I would work on the speed and contrast between melody and accompaniment for the next two weeks and not worry about trying to memorize it.

This is quite a charming piece, thank you for sharing it. I'm discovering a lot of new music on here. I think this is one of those pieces that sound simple but are deceptively difficult to play well, and also I think that piano you have doesn't really do justice to the work you've put in - it's probably harder to hear dynamic differences. With that in mind, I think you bring out the melody quite well, and you shape some phrases quite beautifully.

I just have a few ideas/suggestions:

  • I'd try to phrase the left hand at 3:24 a bit better
  • Try not to accent the second repeated note too much, or any note following a syncopation
  • Add a bit more rubato between phrases to bring out the structure better
  • Maybe a little decrescendo at the end of the small phrases in the beginning

Will you be recording your meet-up performance? It's nice you have a gathering where you can share these things.

Thank you. I won’t be recording it. I may re-record it again on iPhone myself in 2 weeks.

I think Moo’s piano lets him down.

Also recording on an iPhone often means dynamics are lost, and the frequency sensitivity is not flat across the spectrum.
