Hi all,

In anticipation for my next exam, I have been finishing my final piece. I have been polishing it for the last 2 weeks and have a week off now till my next piano lesson and wanted to ask the forum for any tips (before presenting it to my piano tutor).

I don't know what else I can do this piece but when I hear it I think it's missing something, just not sure what it is though..

Can someone please give me some feedback as to what they think I can do to make it better?

I am playing it at 108 crotchet beats per mins (as per the books' recommendation), I am trying to follow the dynamics as close as I can yet when I hear it played by others it sounds more uniformed and hence at a lost what else can I do to...I am getting bored playing it over and over now and if anyone has any ideas what I can do next to this piece to improve upon it would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

J

I think you are doing really well with it! But I think your syncopations could have a bit more "punch" to them to make it more exciting. I don't have the sheet music, but do they have accents on them? Sometimes they write it out, and other times they just expect you to know to do that.

If you're bored with it, however, it's best to take a break from a piece, even for a couple of days. Maybe do that now and then bring it back 3 days before your lesson. This may be enough to give you fresh ears.

Thank you very much Morodiene!

And yes my syncopation was a weakness early on when attempting a simplified version of The Entertainer, it seems it still is...the sheet has both accent & marcato markings but obviously my left hand is not able to bring these markings out.

I will work a little more on that area and then leave it for a few days as per your advice - thanks a lot!

I enjoyed listening to this; quite nicely done.

I agree with Morodiene that it could have a little more "punch" or "drive" to it; working on those accent and marcato markings will bring this piece to better life. I feel that the beat is not always secure, and its delay is not always due to syncopation. Is there a tempo indication on the score? I wonder if it could (or should) go a shade faster.

That said, I think you are getting a good feel for this piece; thanks for sharing.

Regards,

BruceD

Thanks a lot Bruce. The recommended tempo is 108 but I assume as it’s geared towards ABRSM it’s a safer tempo to learn it with. However it’s only the last day or so I was able to speed it up to this from the original 70 I started with. So a little faster will take me a few more sessions with it. smile I need to work on syncopation more before that though. Appreciate the feedback.

Cheers,
J

Hi Morodiene and Bruce,

Just wanted to say thank you very much for the tips and replies - your efforts have not landed on deaf ears and with a bit more practice zooming in on your tips I got this piece to a satisfactory level (for my level at least).

Here is the updated version.

All the best!

Jamie
