I'm looking to buy a second hand piano and found two options :
1: yamaha LU-201c 5127496 (1992) 3200$ CAD
2: yamaha C-113 j-22107651 (2006) 3200$ CAD

I went to a piano shop today and the seller did not find description for #1 so we could not really compare the two. Is one of these better quality?
I'm a teacher (8 students) and I practice a couple hours a week.
Also, I went to see one of the two and it is in a smoking home, has anyone bought one like that, will it smell for a long time?

Thanks!

I suspect so - cars certainly do. We bought one from a smoker, I scrubbed it high and low, deodorised - and 8 years later, when parked in the sun, it still stunk.

I've only experienced one piano which came from a smoker's home - it was in the showroom as a used piano, and the moment I opened the top to look inside - I knew immediately that it had belonged to a smoker - and walked away.

Do a search in PianoWorld - there have been quite a few conversations about getting smells (musty or cigarette) out of a piano.

My (uneducated) guess is that substances such as the felts in the dampers and the wools in the hammers will have been penetrated by the odour of smoke. I doubt that you would ever completely get rid of that odour.

One thing to think about is an ozone generator (like hotels use to deo-smoke rooms)

After my wife quit smoking I bought one to de-smoke our house and it worked great. I'm very sensitive to smoke smells and I can say that our house is smoke smell free.

I believe it was about 100.00 on amazon. You just put it in a room and turn it on for 15 minutes to an hour depending on how bad your problem is and when you come back you have to air the room out because what's left in the room is harmful to your lungs if you breath it in.

(Further Information About Ozone)

WHAT IS OZONE?

Ozone, (O3), sometimes called "activated oxygen", contains three atoms of oxygen rather than the two atoms we normally breathe. Ozone is the second most powerful sterilant in the world and can be used to destroy bacteria, viruses and odors. Interestingly ozone occurs quite readily in nature, most often as a result of lightning strikes that occur during thunderstorms. In fact the "fresh, clean, spring rain" smell that we notice after a storm most often results from nature’s creation of ozone. However, we are probably most familiar with ozone from reading about the "ozone layer" that circles the planet above the earth’s atmosphere. Here ozone is created by the sun's ultra-violet rays. This serves to protect us from the ultra-violet radiation.

HOW DOES OZONE WORK?

While ozone is very powerful, it has a very short life-cycle. When contaminants such as odors, bacteria or viruses make contact with ozone, they are destroyed completely by oxidation. In so doing, that extra atom of oxygen is consumed and there is nothing left...no odor...no bacteria...no extra atom, only oxygen. Ozone reverts back to oxygen after it is used.

If you’re going to practice on it regularly and use it as a teaching piano, I suggest going up the range to a U1 that’s not too old. From what I understand the pianos you’re listing were more of their promotional models (built to be low priced) than those intended for better performance/durability.

If you’re really that budget limited, it may be a good idea to consider other recently made used pianos from different brands.

I agree! A Yamaha U1 (or U3 if you want to go taller) is a great, little durable piano, and can be had for around the same price. Obscure Yamaha models frequently are built in places like Indonesia (with all due respect) and are of inferior quality.
