I hope I'm posting in the right subforum here...

Lately I've been getting annoyed at a particular sound my piano makes when I hit certain keys softly, it creates this awful buzzing sound and (forgive me) it's a real buzzkill.

It happened in one of my recordings (most noticeably at 2:16-2:17): Chopin Nocturne

Now it's just happening on more notes and it's starting to drive me crazy.

Could anyone help? Is there something I can do to stop this from happening?

Seems like an impossible task to diagnose through a recording...

I looked in your profile to get a hint of what kind of piano - You list in your profile that you don't own a piano. Probably best to have someone local come and listen while you play and see if the buzz can be located. They can be tricky, often something nearby vibrating...

Good luck!

Thank you for the lovely playing. I am interpreting a certain buzziness I am hearing sometimes in the recording, as zinging hardened damper felts. But as Ron says, just about impossible to diagnose from a recording.

Sorry - I don't own a piano but I'm renting an apartment with a grand in it right now. The model is a Yamaha C3X.

Thank you! Also, I tried playing with and without the damper pedal - it seems to happen more often with the damper pedal held than not. Is there any way I can fix it if it was hardened damper felts that was causing this?

Thank you both for your help. I didn't think about how difficult it would be to figure out from just a recording, sorry about that. I'll see if I can get a tuner to come in and check it out.

I don't think there is anything we can tell you to try. I think you need to get a piano technician to come and diagnose.

I'm hearing something like damper felt as well, but it doesn't sound to me like the zing that hardened damper felt makes when the damper lifts... the buzz seems to come later than that, as if the dampers aren't clearing the strings completely. D#4 and F4 were obvious culprits. See if you can reproduce the problem on those notes with and without the damper pedal.

I just played through a couple of passages without the damper - it does happen but not as frequently as when I play with the damper. There are quite a few strings on which this happens, actually...I'm not sure if any of that helps.

Not really. More helpful if you were able to reliably reproduce it on a single key, then experiment around on that one key and see what makes the buzz get worse or go away. Alter the volume, try with and without the damper pedal, try lifting the damper manually (like reach into the piano and gently hold it up with your hand), and stuff like that.

Honestly, it happens on several keys - and it's usually a hit and miss. The annoying thing is it happens when I have the damper pedal down, in the most delicate and beautiful phrases. Zing! I've technician coming in tomorrow to have a look at it, though. I really have absolutely no idea how a piano works, even though I've been playing for years...

Thanks for trying to help anyway.

I think I can hear some slight blocking and bobbling at times. If that is the case then the piano needs a regulation service. Your technician should be able to do it.

It will be a careful process of elimination. When you and he/she find it, let us know what it was.

I just dealt with a C3 with an annoying buzz on one note. Turned out it was part of the rear duplex scale in the tenor section. I doubt that is your problem. Sounds like something is loose. Go around and modetately tighten EVERY screw you can possibly find. EVERY screw! EVERY screw! (Except for the ones buried under the polyester finish).
