I think this thread is a salute to the hard work that Americans performed in so many different aspects to support the troops overseas and bring an end to the horrors of WWII.

Thank you for this thread, Joe. I knew nothing of these pianos. I wonder if my dad and uncles, all in the pacific theater, saw or heard them? They wouldn't talk to us about the war.

Johnstaf,

That really was awesome. I agree with GC13..... It really does have a WW II era sound. The piano sounded much better than I expected.

TomLC,

I think that many WW II veterans prefer to discuss the war with other veterans who understand.

Your dad and uncles probably did hear these pianos during USO shows.

I'm glad you like the thread. smile

There's so much great info coming in. I wonder if we'll hear from any WWII vets who have first-hand experience.

Btw, I'm so curious about what the inside and back look like.

I did some more searching at Google>Images for Victory Verticals. It appears that they did indeed have cast iron plates. There may be some incorrect information at the victoryvertical.com website.

It does have that WWII sound.

My father used to play the piano when he was stationed at an airfield in Egypt. I wonder what piano he played.

According to the Official Guide to Steinway Pianos, the Victory pianos were Model 40, with modified Modern or Regency cases.

That was a great article! I wonder how difficult it was to get that upright onto the nuclear sub.

From the article: "Another photo captures Benjamin DeLoache, a baritone who appeared in the U.S. premiere of Berg’s Wozzeck, singing for soldiers on the battlefront with a vertical at hand."

Not "Selections from Berg's Vozzeck", I'm guessing.
