The Bullet Proof Musician recommends flipping a coin for difficult musical decisions and then asking yourself how you would feel if you were forced to live with the coin flip. Happy? Disappointed? Why???? The context he uses is fingering/interpretive roadblocks, but seems like it could also apply here.

Interesting perspective.

Thank you for your suggestion. Well, I am not a professional player, nor any academic in music. I am just a mature student who is working hard towards my diploma piano examination. (I have attained my grade 8 30 years ago which I have just my interest in piano reignited and resumed my piano lessons few months ago... While I was practising my Ravel Sonatine, I found I might seriously need the sostenuto pedal.... but then isn’t it the reason for me to choose a grand of lower/different series for only one piece?

May I know what was your final choice back then?

I actually tried both models at my local Bechstein dealer ... and what he said echoes the sentiment of most people on this thread - you can't go wrong with either of them , it depends on what your priorities are . Having said that I'd like to know how the soundboard sizes (the area) on uprights compare to grands and their relevance , since many people say that tall uprights (52") have more soundboard area than many baby grands .

Thank you for your input too. The sound board size of the upright is 131cm vs that of the baby grand which is 175cm.

According to Bechstein home page the C8 takes 180 hours to build over a period of 8 months, while the A175 takes 250 hours over a period of a year.

If it was me, I would probably have taken the A175, if it was my cousin he would definitely have taken the C8. As others have pointed out, you will not go wrong with either choice. Winnie-the-Pooh would have taken one of each.

I'm sure Bechstein will fit a sostenuto to their upright if you want it.

Lady Bird,

Given the choice of a moderator and a sostenuto pedal for a vertical piano, I’d pick the moderator 97/100 times. Wouldn’t you?

I think you will have to decide.)

Which dealers did you visit in Manhattan? What was your experience?

Faust Harrison. Very well prepared pianos, friendly staff. I tried several uprights, as I was considering an upright for a second piano. Ended up buying a large grand. The model L C Bechstein, though, what an example of that they had!

OK I see what Terminaldegree is referring to. According to Piano
Buyer when choosing the Concert 8 ,you have a choice between
a Practice Pedal or a Sostenuto Pedal ! So there you are
You can have the Concert 8 with a Sostenuto Pedal .

My Merriam Webster dictionary says that the word “eructs” means belches. Is that really what was meant by the original poster?

Thank you. You are right, they can instal the sostenuto pedal into Concert 8, but what I have to pay and time extended to receive my piano will be almost equivalent to that of ordering a brand new A175 back to the time I asked. That’s also why it ends up to my seeking of all your expert opinions here. 🙏
