With the recent passing of another player, the only one I have ever seen live was Johnnie Johnson.

He came to Melbourne a few times in the mid 1990s and he played in a local pub venue just down the road from where I lived. I only got to see him by luck, I recognised his name on posters and literally just turned up that evening. A small venue meant you were close to where they played.

It was a fantastic experience. So much energy.

i guess the lack of comment on Johnny Johnson shows the age demographic of this forum.

Mr. Johnson was Chuck Berry's pianist--in fact, he led the group that Berry joined, and handed over the leadership.

Of the four most widely known pianists of early rock n roll (including Little Richard, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis), Mr. Johnson was the most capable soloist of the bunch. I was always delighted when he took a solo. As well, his background fills were always tasty and to the point.

Here's one of his best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2UBPUlOu7U solo at 1:29

I tuned for him once, on a cruise around the bay with Johnny Nocturne and Johnny Otis. Three Johnnys at one event!

Hi

Johnnie Johnson died in 2005, that's why there's no comments about him.
He was a great player.

Cheers

Unfortunately, I'm afraid Johnnie will forever be the victim of bad sound mixing. Maybe it's the issue of electric guitar players turning up too loud. But it's hard for his excellent playing to cut thru the mix in this recording, and in pretty much all the Chuck Berry recordings I've heard.
