My teacher caught me off guard today and was asking for another piece. I’m chose op 10 no 1 Rachmaninov which is quite straight forward but it got me thinking 🤔 what I want for next piece. I’ve got a lot of slow and dreamy pieces but I’m looking for something like different. I call it spikey music but I think I’d call it light and spiky. Mendelssohn or Rachmaninov I’ve play a lot of recently so looking for other composers. Any ideas. I have one example of the style I’m looking for. I cant find much on YouTube. Thanks

I'm studying Beethoven's Scherzo from Piano Sonata #12, op 26. Offbeats and accents - amazing stream of notes against the accents in the other hand - unexpected contrasting trio in the subdominant...

Schubert wrote some Scherzi as separate pieces.

The scherzo movements of many Beethoven or Schubert Sonatas might fit the bill.

Or some Haydn Sonata movements.

Maybe Clara Schumann Scherzo N°1 Opus 10 ? Chopin wrote a few too but darker than the extract you posted.

His 4th scherzo is definitely the most upbeat and playful of the group. I'm not sure the right word to use here for what op is looking for but I'd describe it as 'punchy' given his example of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Moo, I know you have played a lot of Mendelssohn who utilizes this style often so I'll recommend someone else.

Beethoven's Sonata No. 28 in A major movements 2 and 6 might fall under this category. Of course, Mendelssohn's Scherzo in E minor would be perfect smile

Why not mix it up and play El Albaicin from Iberia haha!

Thank you for the suggestions. Unfortunately i'm very biased and I went back on my decision after the Mendelssohn Scherzo suggestion. I did listen to E minor Scherzo but it is a bit too fast and not much tune. But I found a really good one. Thanks.

I love that sonata. What about some of his etudes? Op. 104b No 1 in B flat is a great piece with very interesting mechanics as you're right hand is your performing the subtle backdrop with continuous arpeggios with the left handed chords/notes being the melody.

Also, if you haven't already songs without words No 5 in A major is similar to what you were originally requesting although even tempered. Or even his caprices op. 33.

Have a look at "August" from Tchaikovsky's The Seasons It certainly is "spiky" and much in the scherzo mood.

Caprice op 33/1 and etude 104b no 1 I love them but they are very hard. They are virtuoso type pieces. I don’t have the finger agility for them. I think I probably should go with a different composer as I have played a lot of Mendelssohn, and plenty a lot of songs without words

I think I’ll buy the Sibelius series as it seems quite a fun etude. It remind me of this piece by Schubert. Musical moment 4.
