I too would take the D if I had more money, bigger house, was younger, and could play much better. 😁
In other words, I’d have to be playing shows in Vegas. 😃

I don’t understand the market for Spirio equipped limited edition Steinways that sell for more than double the standard models!?
Are there really 88 model B & 8 model D buyers, for these premium models?
I guess they’re targeting the Chinese market with Lang Lang!?
You would have to be wealthy, and not mind losing some of it on a pretty player piano . . .

Definitely targeting the Chinese market. The number 8 is an auspicious number for the Chinese. I don’t think having 88 Bs and 8 Ds was a random occurrence. That kind of money is just a drop in the bucket for many nouveau riche in China. Having a limited edition “Black Diamond” signed by Lang Lang player piano is just the right status statement. I suspect they will sell out and appreciate in value, as do many other luxury items in China.

Friends:

I find this is new "Black Diamond" design perfectly matched, on every level, with Lang Lang's persona.

It’s hard for me to even imagine how the rich and super-rich spend their money. There are people that have different high-end signed pianos in their multiple high end homes. “Oh yes, we have a Steinway Black Diamond signed by LangLang at our Newport summer home.”
I just don’t think that they worry about spending too much on a piano.
I’m not remotely close to that league and I regretfully accept I’ll never get there. But I’m blessed enough to have a nice comfortable home and a nice piano that I can play anytime I want.

Yeah. I can't imagine being super rich -or rich at all for that matter. I'd like a big studio with a concert grand or two. After that, I'm not sure I'd be interested in buying lots of expensive stuff. Well maybe a few bits and pieces... grin

From a design standpoint, Dakota Jackson seems to be revisiting many of the same elements from his earlier designs - the arms, the lid prop, the silver plate, the use of macassar, even the shape of the desk is similar. It is attractive to me, especially in the macassar, but after 5 years, I might have expected something more original?

Well, if it is not to your taste, and you have a spare million, I saw that John D. Rockefeller's art case D is available on Ebay now.

I really like the design, it is just right. The Macassar veneer is beautiful (in the picture). Steinway is not the best at veneers finishes, they don't have the refinement the German or Austrian veneers.

The nice grand Sauter designed by Peter Maly still looks better than the black diamond Steinway.
